Groove Urethane
« on: May 09, 2007, 10:23:20 AM »
For those of you who struggle on the short oil patterns, let me remind you how a Urethane ball reacts. I just drilled a 5" pin low groove for the AmZ Championships in two weeks. The pattern I've been practicing on is 34' in distance. We put the 500 abralon pads on the cover.

With this ball I can play outside 5 with EASE. The ball is so smooth and won't overreact to the dry like a reactive does. Get close to the channel and it will hook off of the one board, and if you grab it it'll just go a little high and leave the occasional 9 pin. Overall the carry was good!

This ball will definately come with me whenever there is SHORT oil. If the scoring pace for some reason gets ridiculously high then there is probably a better choice, but on a grind this will keep you in the pocket.

I will agree with that!  I have a Urethane Rhino and AMF Gold Angle Urethane I'll break out for those on that angle.  I love those types of balls drilled with the pin 1 1/2" to the PAP and a 1" x 3" weighthole on the axis.  Good stuff!

[sarcasm] But it's not a hook monster, so who cares!? [/sarcasm]

Luckily I don't find conditions like this too often, though my Crystal Diamond has some nice pop on really burnt lanes.

I have my 2-Piece Black Ave Urethane that I use on light conditions, its still a beast, JPF had it all right from the start.

I could have used a Groove U this evening. That may be my next ball for short oil.

    Thanks for the reminder.

There's no school like the old school!

I'll have to try it on wood lanes too. The surface is pretty good outside at Let's bowl. Sometimes the 1-2 board on wood is a little sketchy.

Well, do not underestimate the Groove's hook potential. A friend of mine got one, as a spare ball and dry lane option in combo with a Rampage. When the lane burns down, the Groove hooks as much as the Rampage - it starts earlier and in a more arcing fashion, but covers more boards than one might expect
