US Open Help
« on: January 13, 2005, 12:58:37 AM »
I am a PBA regional player here in the east and I am bowling the US Open.  I am not a 100% convert to the Brunswick Nation but have had tremendous success with Brunswick equipment in the past year(3-300’s 2-299’s) all with Monsters.  I feel like I have great equipment for the later blocks as they begin to break down.  The area I bowl typically has an oil shortage so you don’t see too many big hooking balls.  So my question to “the Nation” is this.  I am looking for 2 bigger hooking balls for the fresh pattern/ slightly broken down.  One particle and one reactive that I can use on the fresh and before they get bad.  My thoughts are as follows:

I am leaning towards an Impulse Zone with the pin 4-4 ½ from my axis below ring and psa ½” from my thumb on the right side (low hole if needed) and likely give the ball some surface 800grit.  I can’t decide between the UI and the Total Annihilation (I know it is not Big B, but Big B cover) drilling maybe 5 x 4 pin under ring.  I have also thought about a Goliath or RI.  Also, what are your thoughts on dulling a pearl say an Absolute?  I have an OI now and 2 Monster Smash/R’s  that is why I did not mention the OI or Nemesis.  I personally am not a fan of leverage drills as they tend to burn up quick or cause over under.

Here are my specs: Axis 5 3/8 by ½ up.  Track is 12 1/4'” in diameter.  Can vary axis rotation but typically 40-50.  Rev rate don’t know exact # but get good revs on the ball. Ball speed is 18-20.  I consider myself a tweener with  speed.  Can play up the 2 board or boom 6th arrow.  To compare to BrunsNick, I have less revs but more speed.

Any help on ball choices and layouts would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jeff S.

Your specs sound almost identical to mine, although I have a bit less speed...and I'm not nearly good enough to bowl the U.S. Open.

Were it me, and I were looking for something for use in earlier blocks or on heavier volume, I'd give some serious thought to the Warp Zone.  I have one that is drilled with the "medium-dry" layout from the drill sheet, and it's worked great for me in tournaments on oilier Sport conditions as well as for
giving me some room on tighter shots.

As for something reactive, I'd say that the Ultimate Inferno would probably be your best bet.  It's another ball that seems to eat up tougher conditions.  One layout that was recommended to me was a 5" pin-to-PAP, with the pin below the ring, CG in the thumb-positive quadrant, and if an XH is needed, put it 6" from the grip center on a line through the CG.

I can't speak for the others on this board, but I've had very little success when I've tried to scuff the high-performance Big B pearls.  They tend to want to blow off too much energy in the front part of the lane, and not recover as well from deeper inside.

Hope this helps.

I have about 7-10 customers that are bowling in the US Open  here in NJ. the pattern is super FLAT with a VERY low Front to back taper and crisp back ends on a very prestine surface. Every mistake on this type of condition will be magnified 10 fold. For my med to high revrate customers we are going with alot of surface 400-600 grit finish with 5 1/2 to 6" layouts with the MB 3 1/2 to 4" away and using target holes. we are looking for a good midlane read to controll the backend and to not have the ball skid 60 feet I beleive they are using around 30Ml of oil and thats alot for 40FT pattern. also on this pattern the  ball hooks at the same spot down the lane because it so flat. jeff i beleive Al Jones at Rockaway lanes maybe putting out a shot similation give him a call.
