updated version of the AI

WHich ball out now from brunswick line is similar to the absolute inferno?
How does this ball's reaction compare to the absolute?

BJI, in their year end summary, called the Smash Zone a "slightly later-hooking version of the Absolute Inferno".

Jeff, I remember BJI said that. However my experience is very different. IME, Smash Zone is much cleaner and a lot smoother than Absolute.

In the current Brunswick line-up, closest ball would be Wild Ride WITH a strong drilling. With ob finishes, Absolute is earlier and handles bit more oil. 2000 abralon would help WR to handle same amount of oil as Absolute.

Other choice can be Ultra Zone, but it will definitely be smoother down the lane.

i have the smash zone and the ai and they share almost no similarities. the smash zone goes way longer and hits pretty hard probably due to the high polish on the smash zone, whereas the ai's movement is much earlier. if i could compare the ai to a current brunswick ball i would have to compare it to the twisted fury pearl. The twisted is a bit stronger but had a similar movement..

How do the UZ and the TFP compare in backend reaction?
Due to the hybrid pearl cover on the UZ can it handle more oil than the TFP but w/ less length?

IMO, the Smash Zone gets you very close. But the coverstock is different: EnMotion is VERY clean through the heads (my SZ, even though it does not work well for me at the breakpoint, is among the pieces I have thrown that went down the lane as if it was floating), and the polished OOB surface adds to that.

But to "copy" an AI, you have to take the shine off of the SZ (Rough Buff is good andf enhances traction a lot, 2.000 Abralon will work, too) and you might want to drill the ball a tad rollier and stronger than an AI. Will not be the exact copy, but IMO as close as possible.

Ultra is a good one step up from TFP with a different look. It's stronger and handles more oil. Revs up earlier and much smoother down the lane. However, with a proper drilling, it would be better choice, for the conditions you bowl with your Absolute (comparing with TFP).

thanks for the comments. Dizzy i read your post on the SZ and the look you got after u adjusted the surface was fantastic (even though it was used on a shorter pattern). the SZ and the UZ is where my decision lies just have to do some more research before choice is made.

The SZ is a great piece, this thing has a lot of potential. I just had bad luck that it does not match up well with my style at OOB, and with a Rough Buff surface it just overlaps too much with my stronger equipment, like my FMG.

Anyway, I was suprised how well the ball coped even with the short tournament pattern, despite the sheen surface. It just responds less on light oil, and if it finally hits the dry, the traction is huge. Coupled with the low RG core this yields a nice and strong reaction, but the pitfall is that if you have spotty lanes, the thing can be pretty erratic - that's at least my experience. Some surface improves the situation, as other users have stated, too.

I wonder if you (who want an AI) wouldn't be better off finding a Vapor Zone in good shape and drilling that. With the same coverstock and a mildly strong asymmetric core, the drilling should be able to manipulate the core's dynamics to simulate the AI's core.

Also, aren't there a few International release that are a twin to the AI or the Vapor Zone??

If I were to try to get an Absolute-like reaction out of something in the current line, I'd start with a Rattler, and change the surface to 220 with Rough Buff.  I'd expect that a Rattler with this finish would be slightly cleaner in front than the Absolute, and a bit more lateral at the break.

The international release Prime Zone is an Absolute Inferno clone. I have a single drill 15lb. one for sale in the Brunswick for sale forum.
