Upgrading from a Smash R
« on: December 06, 2004, 06:11:03 AM »
Hi:

It seems my Smash R may have finally died. I have a guy baking it to get the oil out as we speak, but if that doesn't work I need to think about a new ball. I am up in the air between a Nemesis and one of the Infernos. I am basically a stroker standing just left of center and throwing mostly between the 1st and 2nd arrow. I only bowl on an every other Sunday league and carry about a 170 average. I would like some thoughts on the best ball choice would be.

Nemesis or an Raging/Ultimate Inferno wouldn't be a bad choice either.

The oil extraction will work wonders.
Keep the Smash and use the money for a couple of lessons - that way you will probably be able to get to 190.

I agree with Mumzie (A proper name should be capitalized!).
Oil extraction does work on the pK 18 coverstock. Make sure it is no longer useful before proceeding with a new purchase.

FWIW, IMHO the Nemesis is probably closer in stock form to the Smash/R thanthe Brusier. Once you start adjusting the cover, the Bruiser may be close enough. Both are prime balls!

What about the Inferno?

The Inferno is an excellent ball; it is just not a replacement for the Smash/R, which is a PK 18 coverstock ball, in my opinion. A lot of people  seem to have had some problems adapting to the Activators. I think it may be more mental or maybe they needed a slightly different drilling due to the different reaction of the Activator. Comfort, both physical AND mental, mean a lot in this game/sport.

An ounce of caution is worth a pound of cure.

Actually the Inferno may be more flexible, and will definitely hit harder than some PK 18 balls. If you choose this path, just make sure you get a good drilling for you and the oil condiiton you're bowling on from someone experienced with the Inferno.
