Vapor Zone
« on: September 10, 2007, 06:40:39 PM »
Is it just around here that this ball is a must have?

I have recently acquired on NIB and I LOVE it!!  An amazing ball (much better than the Red Zone that I tried before).

There are also 5 other people in my home alley using them to great effect.

What means "better"? A lot of people (me inlcuded) are still great fans of the even older PK stuff, like PK 17 or 18. The Activator family just delayed the point where the ball reads the lane, and made it react to dry surface parts more "violently". The Octane family pushed this even a bit further.

With such a trait, balls will become more angular by nature (assuming everything stays the same) - which is appealing because it looks good, and you have the impression that the ball will handle more/longer oil. But it just the delayed reaction and a retarded energy depletion.

On the other side, these aggressive coverstocks make the ball more susceptible to carrydown and release errors, at least that's my experience and impression. Trcation ability imporved, but the fine line for surface adjustments to fit the ball to your needs has become ever narrow with snappier coverstock.

While Activator is easy to tune, Activator+ is a very touchy thing. Polished, it did not work well for many people (II), and even with a slight sanding its traction abilities increased very much. The original Octane on the RadI at OOB was another case of love/hate, and I found that just a slight surface adjustment could make the ball work better or at all.

Hard to tell what "better" really is. Personally, I have bcome a huge fan of "old scholl" stuff, just because it is durable, reliable and fits my high track stroker game well.

Especially when it's on balls like the Inferno, Zone Classic, Red and Strike Zones, Ultimate Inferno.  Less so on balls like the Absolute, Intense, and Vapor Zone, which all use Activator+.

Each coverstock got their advantage if you know how to prepare it.
For OOB condition, I will chose Activator / Activator+ (on A.I).
BTW, we wish Big B's next Intl release can use Activator+ w/ Fury Core.
Could be amazing.

How would this ball stack up for a stroker with faster ball speed on most medium conditions? Just curious.

Activator+ is pretty aggressive. On a fresh medium shot, the VZ is a very good choice, I just would not drill it too strong. Once the heads break away, the ball might grip early and bleed power, but that's nothing specific to the VZ, just a generall issue with strong coverstocks.
