Sport drilling for Scorchin and Ambush
« on: February 21, 2006, 04:05:45 AM »
Will be bowling in a sport league this summer and you get these two balls prior to the league and can ONLY use these two balls for the league.  Take a look at my profile and give suggestions on how I should get them drilled.  I have never bowled on a sport shot so don't know what to expect.  I want something that will work on the sport but can also be used on some house and tournament shots as well.  I'm considering a 1E on the Scorchin and 2L on the Ambush.  Any thoughts on pin lengths and top weight preferences would be apprectiated as well.  There will be a "ball draft" where you have to pick your ball in a lottery type system.  Hopefully they don't have a bunch of "goofey" balls there.
Thanks

You do know a sport condition can mean any amount of oil??

Sport conditions usually require control drillings; so be cautious because these balls, for the most part, provide a fairly controlled type of reaction, as part of their basic design. If you drill them to enforce an controlled reaction, you can limit their usefulness to an extreme degree.

On eother point: both are for medium or heavier oil amounts. If one or more of the sport patterns they give you wind up being lighter, you'll have to either apply lots of polish or "slipping" agent and drill a 2nd Ambush (the weaker ball) extremely weak, like pin in the track. That is, unless yo uhave very high ball speed with low rev rate.

Good luck.

Charlest,
I realize a sport shot could be any kind of oil that is why I was going to drill the Scorchin aggresive for oily lanes and the Ambush with a pin up and further from my PAP to be less aggressive.  I do throw hard with probably medium revs, definately not high revs.  I usually strugle more with too much oil versus too little oil.  Do you think for my style a 2L on the Ambush would still be too much for a dry shot?

I think 2L would be better for a person whose speed to rev ratio is lower.Your higher ball speed makes me think to get more midlane, 2E may be better. You can still use a 4 1/2" - 5" pin to PAP distance to have control and for lighter oil. It will flare less.

Can you use a 2md Ambush?
If you use a low pin posiiton like 2 E, but put the pin closer to you PAP (like 2" pin to PAP), you'll have ball for heavier oil (but not as heavy as the Scorchin). It will flare the same amount as Ambush #1, but be earlier in the lane. (similar but maybe not exactly like 3E.

Can't get a second Ambush.  The league rules are you get one of each ball and have to use those and only those balls.  There is even a provision in the rules that states they will be doing random serial number checks to ensure you are using the given balls.  Kinda weird, but I also kinda like the idea that everyone will be on a level playing field as far as equipment is concerned.  It just so happened that these were both balls on my wish list and I have been wanting to try out a sport condition, so I figured why not.  I don't know if my chances of doing well in the league are all that good, so I'm more concerned about drilling the balls so that they will be of use after the league is over than getting them set up ideally for the league.  Trying to balance between the two as much as possible though.
