Versa Max Carry problems
« on: March 04, 2012, 10:13:55 PM »
Let me start off by saying that this is one of the best rolling balls I have seen in a long time..  I had it drilled up a couple of days ago and went out and threw 2 strikes and left (7) 7pins in the first game... Ugh !  again, this ball rolls so well, I would not put it away and carried a little better with a 232 the second game with (4) 7 pins. I did adjust, but seems that no matter what I did, flush hits carried, mid pocket or light pocket hits let me 7 pins or an occasional ten pin. Last game was a 198 with (6) 7 pins...

I am thinking the ball just needs to get a little track in it, but wondering if anyone else has had carry issues with the ball and what you have done to correct....  BTW, it was a medium oil house shot (Fresh)

I almost always have problems with factory finish and usually will (following the steps used at the factory) resurface a ball to knock off the factory finish, even though I am bringing it back to box finish.  I find that the surface from the factory on most pieces (for most brands for that matter) tends to play very touchy until they start to track out (as you suggested).  Try a quick surface change (down and back to box finish) and see if it improves.

Before you resurface it, just barely knock the gloss off. The ball's strength is the easy length and "arc" off the dry. Mine is a "carry monster" as long as I'm playing straighter lines through the front 2/3 of the lane, then it does it's job nicely.

My proshop lefty had the same problem with the carry in box

finish. He knocked the cover down with a worn 2000 pad

and went out to shot 785ish with a 300..

Cool. I thinking I'm going to have it drilled with the pin under the bridge. I'll get a couple of games in in league before a tournament this saturday and decide whether to knock the shine of the ball. Thanks

I hit mine with a new 4000 to knock the factory shine off and the ball is amazing!! I rolled it a few times after i drilled it to see what the factory was like and it was good and had decent carry, but it came alive with the shine knocked off!! Now when I clean it I just use a white scotchbrite pad and it has more of a sheen and not shine!!! I always change the factory finish to something I know I can duplicate!!! Just my $.02, Bruce

Well, last night was a train wreck. : )  Knocked off the factory shine with a 4000 pad and just could not carry..  I nailed the pocket all night..  I will bring it to nationals in a couple of weeks because leaving one pin spares is important as you all know...  I am not giving up, but I am a little discouraged thus far..  Again, this is the best rolling ball I have seen in a long time... Maybe since my black Vendetta..  I just need to find a way to carry more.

Thanks again for all of your responses !

If it's just leaving corners, it's all in the entry angle.  Doesn't have a whole lot to do with the ball in general. Except for the fact that the ball isn't giving you premium entry angle.  Sometimes, a ball just can't create the proper entry angle by coming in too late or hooking to early.  Maybe you already understand that, but corner pins or single pins are an indicator that your entry angle is wrong.  Not that the "ball" can't carry.

I remember one time, I couldn't get the 10 out for the life of me.  Guy told me to scoot back 6 inches on the approach.  I threw 13 in a row.

I found the Versa Max to be super clean through the fronts and pretty smooth across the rest of the lane.  I have found more success with this ball as the heads burn up or a defined track area develops to bump the ball off of.  Whereas the Ulti-Max gave me a little more midlane strength and could be used on the fresh.

The Versa Max for purposes of creating length, is awesome.  Not sure I would break it out on the fresh.  I'd probably stick to a more aggressive ball overall like the Nexus or even the Ulti-Max. Once some friction develops, ball down to the Versa Max.  It's been great from 4th and 5th arrow at creating entry angle when it has some friction to work with.

You have a ball that is made for length. On many conditions this will create an entry angle that results in lots of corner pins. On the right conditions it will be perfect.

We have drilled four of these so far.  We had one person that had the same issue that you are having.  His was, from the sound of it, about the same layout as yours.  We had to knock off the factory polish as other's have said and it is better, but he still has some issues.  The other three we drilled we're pin down and we have not had that issue with the other three, mine included in that three.  I am just wondering if pin up makes the ball push too much through the fronts on some conditions, thus not allowing a good entry angle.  Just a small addition to the conversation.

Who needs a 300 or 800, when I have a 294 and a 295!?!?!
