Versa Max Carry problems
« on: March 04, 2012, 10:13:55 PM »
Let me start off by saying that this is one of the best rolling balls I have seen in a long time..  I had it drilled up a couple of days ago and went out and threw 2 strikes and left (7) 7pins in the first game... Ugh !  again, this ball rolls so well, I would not put it away and carried a little better with a 232 the second game with (4) 7 pins. I did adjust, but seems that no matter what I did, flush hits carried, mid pocket or light pocket hits let me 7 pins or an occasional ten pin. Last game was a 198 with (6) 7 pins...

I am thinking the ball just needs to get a little track in it, but wondering if anyone else has had carry issues with the ball and what you have done to correct....  BTW, it was a medium oil house shot (Fresh)

Every ball has an intended purpose.  This ball in particular has great length and recovery way down lane.  Pin up is typically going to delay the reaction even farther downlane.  With great length comes steep entry angles.  Obviously, if this is your only ball, maybe pin down is a better plan or to scuff off the surface.  I'd probably throw something a tad bit more aggressive midlane to eliminate the steep entry angle.  Then change to this ball in game 3 of a league set as the friction in the lane develops.  I just hate to see a ball get a generally bad "Carry" rating when reality is, the ball needs to be drilled and thrown in the right condition scenarios to strike consistently.  This includes playing the right parts of the lane.  There is a reason PBA players strike more consistently than amateurs.  They are capable of creating optimum entry angles whether through hand positions, lane play, or a new ball layout.  Often, they have to put that whole puzzle together in between frames.

We had to knock off the factory polish as other's have said and it is better, but he still has some issues. The other three we drilled we're pin down and we have not had that issue with the other three, mine included in that three. I am just wondering if pin up makes the ball push too much through the fronts on some conditions, thus not allowing a good entry angle. Just a small addition to the conversation.

Who needs a 300 or 800, when I have a 294 and a 295!?!?!

Dude.  Not knocking the ball at all.  I love the heck out of mine.  Just stating my observations based on our customers and their feedback to me.  No need to act like I don't understand ball reaction.  Of course balls have their place at the right time.

Steve,
Did you find out what your PAP, etc. is?
I probably know your layouts better than anyone!
I know you track a lot lower than I do . . .
Your balls have always worked well for my game, w/a thumb re-slug, and span adjustment.
My PAP: 5-1/4, 1/8^....
I'd really take your question over to: Mo Pinel and ask him.
Just my opinion.....

Well, last night was a train wreck. : )  Knocked off the factory shine with a 4000 pad and just could not carry..  I nailed the pocket all night..  I will bring it to nationals in a couple of weeks because leaving one pin spares is important as you all know...  I am not giving up, but I am a little discouraged thus far..  Again, this is the best rolling ball I have seen in a long time... Maybe since my black Vendetta..  I just need to find a way to carry more.

Thanks again for all of your responses !

Thanks Andy.  After quoting me in your post, it just seemed the other way.  Obviously it wasn't what I had first thought.  Sorry about that.  I have been a member around here for a long time and don't post as much since people get so critical all the time.  My "someone is being too critical" radar went up.  :)  Hope you understand.

I think this topic would be applicable here.  Since, it's my topic I know this change in drilling angle helped make this ball much more active in mids and backend.   Also it's symmetric like the Versa-Max and much the same type of ball strength but lower Rg and different core/cover....but you can get the general idea.

Duke is correct Mo can help with this.

Got the versa max drilled with the pin next to and a little below the ring finger with the cg stacked. Bowled a tourny this weekend and shot 745 in doubles 650 in singles. I stayed with ball a little to long. lanes started drying out. I just wish I had another versa max with a longer pin. This ball will handle all mediums except for the extremes. I had no carry issues. I will be getting another for later sets. If you want a ball that is smooth and predictable with great carry this is the one.
