Versa-Max vs. IQ Tour
« on: May 10, 2013, 04:09:07 PM »
For those who might know, how do the two compare?  I have heard the V-max will hook harder when it hits the friction with same drilling.  True?

I have both, but with significantly different layouts.  I think there are a lot of similarities in the two balls.  They both can have a hook stop look, but on the right conditions they really face up solid.  Because of the layout my IQ is a little stronger from deeper angles.

Just a general impression, but the V Max may match up a little better for high rev, or rev dominant players.  The IQ solid is super popular with top senior players who are lower rev guys.

Thank you, AvaBob.  I'm not a cranker and not a stroker.  Definitely a tweener.  I get the feeling the Veras might be too similar to my Nexxxus.

Chet, I have both the Versa-Max and the Nexxxus with both drilled not exact but similar. I play along the oil line with the Versa-Max, but have to move in a bit more than that with the Nexxxus.

If you are thinking about buying one or the other, you may have to settle for the IQ Tour as the Versa-Max has been discontinued for a while now.

i have both iq pin over ring v-max pin down . The v max isn't half the ball the iq is imo. What i was looking for with the v-max is what I got with the iq a strong med oil polished ball awesome backend recovery and great off pocket carry,v-max is good when the lanes break down it hooks, but its carry isnt nearly as consistent and its not nearly as strong.

Just a follow up.  No comparison at all between Nexxxus and Versa Max for me, but much different layouts.  I think Versa Max is more condition specific.  I like it really well on broken down patterns because it often allows me to play less out angle than my other stuff.  IQ tour solid is almost too versatile.  It looks so smooth and gives me so much control that I sometimes don't put it away soon enough.  It cost me 50 pins in Reno when I didn't grab my Lucid and move in quicker in singles.

You cannot compare 2 balls drilled so differently.

Can't compare them by reading magazine articles either.

Of course not, since they were drilled identically and thrown by the same bowler on the same oil pattern on the same lane surface. Such a comparison would be totally unjustified ....

Have you personally thrown both or either?

I have both drilled pin up. The IQ Tour is a medium to medium heavy oil ball. It is earlier and requires more oil up front to be at its best. The Vmax is a medium light to medium oil ball and is later and more angular on the back.

I guess it depends how the Versa-Max is drilled. Mine is drilled pin down and 3 1/2"  from my PAP and is best on medium to medium-heavy oil.

Brick, agree that lay out and bowler's characteristics will impact the way that the ball reacts. However, do you have an IQ drilled pin under? If so, is it your experience that the Vmax handles oil conditions the same as the IQ Tour?

For me, the cover on the IQ Tour is a much stronger cover than the cover on the Vmax. Also, the core on the Vmax does not seem as rolly.

Just my experience.  Both balls have the pin 4 3/4 from PAP. My ball speed is around 15.5 Quibica. I am a high tracker, but do not know my tilt and rotation. Avg rev. rate--stroker.

crider, no IQ Tour here. I was only quoting what the Versa-Max does for me. I seem to keep bragging about it as I love it and it is one of the better and more versatile balls I have had. Always the first ball out of my bag.
