I am visiting my driller tomorrow afternoon to drill a new VersaMax for my son but I wanted to see if I could get some drilling thoughts here on BR before I go. He is moving up in ball weights which means I am "rebuilding" his arsenal. He has the following specs: 190+ average, high track, 14 mph, hi revs / cranker style, 5 degrees tilt, 60-65 axis rotation, PAP 6 3/8 over 1 1/8 up.
He currently has a CrossRoad drilled at 80 x 5 1/2 x 30 for medium heavy to medium conditions. He gets an awesome look with this ball but, it is clearly too much ball when the lanes transition to medium-dry conditions. I am looking for the VersaMax to go below the Crossroad and I want to drill it to emphasis length and control.
My initial thought was something like a 70 x 5 1/2 x 40 which puts the pin in the gripline above the bridge and the CG slightly positive (one of my personal favorite layouts). But I also saw the following link that makes me consider an 85 x 4 1/2 x 45 (this layout puts the Pin above and to the right of the ring finger with the CG essentially in a stacked position).

Can any of you pro shop operators or drillers out there share your thoughts to help me make the most effective use of my time with my driller tomorrow?

Use your favorite drilling pattern and adjust the surface as necessary........that's what I'm going to do.

I agree with Don to a large extent. The only point I would raise so that you are aware of it is that the Versa Max is the cleanest ball I've ever thrown. So, if you put a length drilling on it thinking you need to help it through the heads, it's really not necessary. Don's point about surface adjustment is spot on. The ball takes to them very well. I ended up drilling mine pin down and hand scuff with a 2K pad. It's my go to ball most of the time.

I have two drilled: one pin down/my favorite and one pin above the ring finger! Pin down is earlier with strong arc move at the break point. The pin up is a bit longer, but more angular at the break point! I don't have a weight hole in either ball! As was stated earlier, the ball is the cleanest thru the fronts of any ball I've ever used! Very easy length with any drilling, just the pin down starts sooner!

Two comments.
1. I think the Crossroad and VersaMax basically cover the same conditions. Obviosly both are two of the best options out right now, but a lot of overlap.
2. If your son's PAP is 6 3/8" over, we are looking at a full roller. If so, you need to re-think drilling options.
