Ultimate Inferno
« on: October 09, 2004, 12:34:14 PM »
i have a question. i bought a UI and asked the shop to drill it up
using the Brunswick layout 1E for heavy oil. they said they used a 3" pin though it specifies using 0-2 pin-outs for most bowlers. they said the 3"pin is going to make it move up a little bit from my PAP. anyway, i've tried it and i kind of disappointed. i was expecting early roll with a decent backend, but i was using my V2 sanded with over 300 games and it moved just as much as the UI. is that normal? any responses are appreciated.

I got the same drilling on my UI and didn't like the ball when I first threw it either, but then I took the ball and put a light coat of polish on the ball, and it made all the difference.  I recommend doing this, b/c my ball is actually hooking more with some polish on it than it did in book finish.

kingpin,

If I Might offer some ball and hook ideas, as I see them:

The amount a ball will hook is dependent on many factors. One of the most important is the relationship between the surface friction of the ball, the smoothness or roughness (friction) the lane surface AND the amount of oil on that lane surface. Most balls, whatever their own surface and its friction, have a range for which the lane surface + the amount of oil is at an ideal amount.

While I think most people would say that amount is probably slightly higher (more slick) for the Ultimate than for the V2 Sanded), the difference may not be huge; after all, the V2 Sanded in box condition was meant for medium-heavy oil. For your average bowler, the Ultimate is probably for medium-heavy+ oil to possibly true heavy oil.

So, unless your lane surface and the amount of oil favored the Ultimate, the amount of hook for both balls might look the same. It may be the same ...  if they are drilled similarly AND if their surfaces are the same. With over 300 games on your V2, its surface might have more friction than it did when new.

If you tried both balls on heavier oil, then the Ultimate might seem to hook more. It's hard to tell from your description.

Drlling 1E is not just early roll, it is a very strong overall drilling, intended to supply maximum flare. There are earlier rolling drillings. Possibly, for your release, your lane surface AND the amount of oil your house puts down, this is too earlier a roll, just too strong a drilling for the Ultimate. Note my use of the word, "possibly".

The Activator solid coverstock on the UI is a strong cover; at 800 grit box condition it is a very grippy cover.

I'd suggest trying it on heavier oil than your intial test. If both balls are still too close, you may want to SLIGHTLY alter one or both balls to differentiate them. I have also found it useful to add a SLIGHT polish to my UI.

Good luck.

i'm relatively new to bowling only 2-3 years seriously. so i appreciate
your replies, i'll probably polish it up slighty to see how it works.
