Help Me Help My Brunswick Friend!!!
« on: November 15, 2005, 03:32:03 PM »
Hey Brunswick Fanatics,

I'm a Track guy myself, but I told my friend that bowls with me in our serious All-Star league on Thursday nights that I would help him find a suitable bowling ball to add to his all Brunswick arsenal. You see my friend is slightly above a tweener in my eyes. His PAP is 4 1/2 X 1/2 up. He has an arsenal right now consisting of the Ultimate Inferno, Absolute Inferno, and the Pepsi Spare ball I gave him a few days ago. Last week during league his reaction was very poor.

He tried using the UI but to no avail the ball hooked way too much. He took it a step down to the AI but he got the over/under reaction horribly! I suggested to him one of Brunswick BVP series like either the Punisher or the Rampage. I feel he needs something as a step down from the Inferno line and I have heard from certain Brunswick followers that the BVP is a good series to go with.

So I guess here is what I feel he needs, anybody's thoughts on this would be more than welcome and if you have any help, that would help too because I intend on getting him one of the bowling balls suggested below:

My Friend's Brunswick Arsenal:
Ultimate Inferno -- For the slick stuff, I believe he has it drilled Stacked Leverage and it has a weight hole.
Absolute Inferno -- For the medium conditions, this is his most angular shaped reaction ball.
(HELP ME FILL IN THE VOID HERE)
* BVP Rampage -- I suggested to him a layout that would give him more length; yet, more snap on the back end. Would this be a more versatile ball than the Punisher?
* BVP Punisher -- From the specs I read on Brunswick's site, this ball goes longer and turns harder than the Rampage. Would this be a good step down?

I have even suggested one of the Asymmetrical Zones but as a last resort because of the aggressiveness of asymmetrical cores. I myself have thrown the Zone Classic and Impulse Zone and felt the ZC had a ton of backend while the Impulse was very smooth and controlled.

So please guys if you can help me put together something for my friend that would be great, he is in a drought. His pro shop only allows Hammer, Ebonite, Storm, and Brunswick and since he doesn't wanna be like the rest of the other people, he chose to take Brunswick's route and promote them. So please help me so I will know what kind of Christmas present to bring to his front door step this year! Thanks guys and God Bless!

Rampage, or polished Nemesis.

IME the Punisher is somewhat weaker than the Rampage, and it doesn't turn the corner nearly as well when playing inside lines.

I'd also suggest a Zone Classic, and have an experienced driller do the job who has seen your friend bowl. Mistakes on asymmetric balls tend do be more severe than on "normal" core balls.

Another option to try could be the new BVP Ambush. I have not thrown it yet, but a local pro and Brunswick staff player is very impressed with its controllability. His one is drilled pin under ring and the pin kicked out towards PAP. He told me that this way he can use it either on slick, fresh lanes and even on a played down THS in evening house league.

Rampage and polished Nemesis sound good, too, but the Rampage could turn out to be a bit squirty.

Absolute inferno...over under...light scuffing could help.

I find the mistakes I make are usually surface  Too little or too much.

Or pin too far for my rev rate for getting over under(say on an ai)
Or too much pin on a strong ball like the UI.

When I say too much pin I mean too close pin to pap distance or on weaker surfaced balls...too little pin means too long a distance from pin to pap!

By Brunswick hook ratings, a Classic Zone would fit right in there.  Is there really that big of a step between an Absolute and a Rampage?  Both are pearlized, and Activator+ is pretty close to PowerKoil 18 in overall strength.  Looks like he could just adjust the cover of the Rampage to somewhere between the factory polish and the Absolute's rough buff and save some money on an extra ball.  If he still sees the need, he could pick up an Classic Zone later.

For sure the Classic Zone.  Keep the pin under the bridge and hit it with a white scotch brite pad.  Over under no more....

Hey Brunswick Fanatics,

From what I've been reading so far with all the posts; it is a split decision between the Zone Classic and the Rampage. TwoHeadedBoy, I totally agree with you on the tremendous gap with the AI to the Spare ball. The funny thing is, last night during league I was subbing on his team and beforehand, he polished up the AI. Now, whether or not that was a good idea or not, I'm not all that sure but he was using the AI most of the night because the UI was just too much after the heads broke down.

So, let's narrow this down some. Rampage and Zone Classic. I'm glad to see that my thoughts for him getting a Rampage have been somewhat backed up. I would have never considered the Zone Classic until I read all these posts. So between those two, what would you guys suggest for my friend? Thanks again and God Bless you!

I have both of the balls mentioned that your friend has, & there is a gap.  I started out with the Classic then the Ultimate then the Absolute.  I have actually switched over to the Zone line, & have picked a Strike Zone for med/heavy, the Classic for medium, & this weekend am picking up a Time Zone for the light/dry.  I guess what I'm trying to say is the Classic is an awesome ball.  It works well for medium oil, & if you layed it out to not be too aggressive, then it would work well as a med/light condition which is what your friend needs.  Im taking a guess here & will probably get slammed for not knowing what I'm talking about, but mabey pin under ring, with the PSA in a weak position, I appologize as I'm trying to pick up as much as I can as to how balls are layed out.

Mabey King Nick can suggest a good med/light drilling for your friend.

I Absolutely LOVE my Ultimate Inferno, but Ultimately I LOVE my Absolute Inferno!

Bowling is more fun when you only have to throw 1 ball..........F*#k the 10 pin!!

you can close gaps in the lineup my learning different releases and hand positions.

knowledge seems to be the forgotten tool in bowling.

unless you can go from 15 mph cranker to 30 mph up the back, there's no way you can use an AI on all conditions that a plastic ball doesn't cover. Let's be realistic here

yeah, that drastic of a change is realistic...
im saying, that you can adjust the way you deliver the ball to smooth out the gaps between balls.

if you're a solid player, you really only need 3 balls in your arsenal for the house shot, heavy oil, medium oil, dry lane/spare.

if you need 6-8 balls at the bowling alley to master THS, you need to be more adaptive with your releases.

you're kidding yourself if you think pros dont change releases and only change balls to adapt to small changes.
