What condition do you use your Smokin on?
« on: January 24, 2006, 01:34:53 PM »
When I got this ball, I thought it would be useful on a fresh house shot with a medium oil volume.  What I've found is that the ball won't wrinkle until the third game and the lanes really start to dry out.  Am I alone in this?  The ball is laid out with the pin under the bridge and the cg kicked to the right a bit.  I expected more power at the breakpoint, but it just seems to lazily turn when it does.  I am a low rev, medium speed player and prefer to play the track area.  Is it the layout on the ball, or is it really meant for a medium light to light pattern?

I use it on Med to lite, I find that it is similar to my Ice.  I can also use it on fresh short patterns or house shots but I rarely bowl on house shots and just about anyball works on a house shot so thats not saying much.

Yeah I agree! I have more hand than any one here and I find my smoking just not enough ball or a bit squirty on the fresh.

Plus even when the lanes start breaking down I find I cant circle the lane with my smoking and carry that well. The best results I get from mine are from staying right and taking my hand out of the ball a bit.

Its a great ball just a bit to condition specific for me compared to the other infernos I have had.

I have med to high revs, not an extreme cranker though. I usaully use mine on medium-medium oil. it seems to like medium conditions over anything else in my opinion. Once it gets to oil and heavy oil, i put my SI away and pull out my OI.

Its hard to play with an inferno and not get burned. Last time I threw my inferno, the opposing bowler definitely got burned.

A friend of mine has a SI and it is only playable on medium conditions. If some longer oil is present, the ball needs extra revs to perform.

BTW, anybody notice that Brunswick assigned the SI a "less oily" position in the Comparison chart (along with the SZ) and reduced the hook potential numbers?

I didn't notice that, Dizzy, but I'm not surprised.  When I picked this ball up I did so on the understanding that it would be good for anything from medium-heavy to medium-light.  How wrong I was, and it may have soured me on the big B for good.  This was my first foray into Brunswick, and I am not impressed.

Well, I could be more precise, but it is a friend's ball and I can only observe. In the beginning we was struggling with the ball almost on any condition, it was very erratic. Then, after finding out that the ball can use good revs to work, ball control became much better although he is muscling the ball. Carry is great, the SI is a great hitter. But from my observation I consider it to be quite condition specific, a touch below the AI in box condition, or much like an OI just with a sharper (and more nervous) breakpoint recation.

I think twoheadedboy's setup with Rough Buff is a good choice for this ball to make it more versatile and easier to handle.

You've hit on one of the things that has been giving me trouble...an erratic breakpoint on the ball.  Sometimes it just doesn't want to really turn the corner, while other times it screams.  As far as revs, there's not much I can do there, I'm a low rev player.  I am working on it, though!

I can use mine on a fresh house shot, or a broken down drier shot. I just make some adjustments and it's very versitile. Mine is pretty much OOB surface, and can play alot of different lines with it. Alot of people don't match up or like this ball, but I love mine and it's well worth the money.

I have an OI and SI and the OI hooks circles around my smokin.  what you describe mr splendorex is exactly what I see out of my si.  You have to crank it and only play if there are dry areas and preferably alot of them.  pretty disappointed in mine to be honest.  hard to believe I cant get the same out of many mid or low priced balls.

Yeah, I really don't see this as a "High Performance" ball.  It has a great hit, and a nice heavy roll, but that's not enough for me.

Medium-lite splendor, AI and OI for a fresh shot are the way to go.

Well, when I saw my friend's SI for the first shots it reminded me much of a Punisher on steroids... equally itchy, just overall stronger. By the reaction pattern, I think both balls are quite similar,a nd work on almost similar conditions with the SI handling a little more oil, but not really much.

I'm a right handed bowler with a medium speed and alot of revs.  SI is definitely for medium oiled to light condition. My SI is layed out as an early roller out of box condition with 2 inch pin under ring finger with cg kicked out to the right. On fresh oil, I play the SI more on the outside.  Target is: 7th board heading towards 6,5 (almost a straight shot)and it seems to come in nicely to the pocket.  I just move to the left as the lanes get drier...

I'm surprised by the lack of love for this ball. I love mine. It hasn't seen much action recently, because i've been throwing my vapor zone. Mine is drilled pin above ring and handles any medium and some heavier shots without much trouble for me. The time to put it away for me is when I ecounter carrydown. The ball despises carrydown. Other than that, one of my favorite balls right now...the hit and carry are like few balls I've ever seen.
