Can't be the bowler...right?
« on: October 07, 2006, 06:00:38 PM »
No carry as of late.  My average dipped to 217, struggling to maintain it there.

Current arsenal:

SCB--cg axis
UI--4 1/2 by 3 1/2
Blueberry saw--pin on center of grip, cg on midline
VAP--pin at 3 1/2, psa on val
Sapphire zone --3x3
Rampage--5 1/2 by 5
Crimson phantom

I'm gonna try the UI as I can get anything else to carry.  The proshop has a couple of Radicals, any chance those would fit me better?

The Radicals are hit and miss.  Mine hits like mad, especially on light hits, and I trip quite a few 4's too.  Haven't used it since I bought my Red Zone . . but that's another story.  The Radical is not a hook in a box kind of ball, and it's a lot smoother than it's supposed to be, but getting to the pocket isn't that hard if you can get it to rev a little earlier.  If you can get it to pick up in the mids and start revving, you'll love it.  If not, you're gonna be leaving junk all day.

Andy,

C'mon; you know better. Explain the "no carry" situation, before you start talking about needing a new ball to solve the problem.

Dry-ish heads, carrydown due to lack of maintenance; odd oil patterns and/or amounts. WHich balls are you using and what are there surfaces?

You might need something so minor as a slight surface adjustment. You've got a bunch of very good balls, all of which can be changed and changed bacl very easily.

Well, they've been tinkering with the shot.  Nothing big, just adding a touch of oil in the heads.  Finding the pocket isn't a problem, hitting it flush enough to carry is.

Two weeks ago, I took my vapor at 1500 grit sanded.  It floated through the break, my buzzsaw 800 grit was the best ball in the bag that week.  This past week, I took the sapphire, bwick high gloss finish, hoping to play further right.

The shot has gotten very over/under for most of the league.  What used to be a nice blended pattern, seems to have become more wet/dry.  I moved out to 5, firm speed and carried one strike before pinging 4s and 9s.  Moved 2 and 2 left, weak 10s.

I'm thinking the sapphire might work well around 8-10 if I take the polish off, which was my next guess.  I'm taking the UI too, I should be able to play whereever I want with it provided I execute properly.

217 - i would of hated to see your average before that.

217 is a great average man.

Great analysis comments, Andy. This is the Andy I'm used to seeing posting.

Wet/drys make consistency problematic at best. The most arc-y, control type balls you have there seem to be the Sapphire and Blueberry. CHanging the surface of either or both seem like the rational path to follow. Smoothing the surface of the Sapphire is what I'd be inclined to try. PK 17 solid can be spooky strong. If you have access to a spinner (I forget if you have one or not), TO START WITH, I'd try 1000 grit matte, if only because your Vapor skidded thru the breakpoint.  (Might even try 1000 grit on the Vapor? that will make it flip much less.)

Good luck.
(Still don't think you need a new ball)

Nor do I, but I've got my eye on a few.

The vap was money with the 1500 grit finish last season.  It might need a good de-oiling.  I've been meaning to do that....

I'll post back after wednesday to see if I can get something going.
