Which to Rico, Twisted or Sidewinder
« on: April 12, 2008, 02:08:22 PM »
Going to be drilling both of these balls up next week and want to finally try out the Rico drill.  Will be bowling a PBA pattern league (only 2 of the patterns) this Summer and then will be using the balls for mostly house shots.  Which ball should I Rico?  I thought I remember seeing posts about that being a great drill for the Twisted but not positive.  That is the one I am leaning towards now.  If the CG is out of alignment, should I prefer one direction over the other?  We will be having a ball draft where there will be a room full of balls and we get to pick from them.

Wow, first response from the master himself, Sweet!  I think I follow what you are recommending.  A low top weight allows the CG to be shifted without causing as big of an imbalance and a shorter pin would also limit the amount of side and thumb weight, thereby giving some flexibility on where the hole has to be drilled.  If the CG is inline with the pin and PSA, wouldn't
quote:
place the weight hole from the center of the grip through the CG along the VAL
be on the PSA anyway?  Sorry if that is a stupid question, but while I think I've learned much about drilling layouts, I haven't used many weight holes and still am trying to figure out where they should be placed to get the desired results.
Also, I have loved my Ambush with the pin just under the fingers on the grip centerline with the CG kicked out to give me about 3/4 ounce of side weight (wanted to allow for adding a hole, but never did).  The bridge has cracked out and I wanted the Sidewinder to replace this ball.  Should I just drill it the same, or should I make some adjustments due to the different core?
Thanks for the help.

Just thought of something else.  When you say low top weight, what range is that?  Like 1 to 2 ounces?  I do have a large long thumb, so I assume that will take out a good amount of top weight as well.

I do the one at BZC.  I also work int he Pro Shop there.  I was going to put a RICO on my Sidewinder and probably stack leverage on the Twisted.

Greg,
That sounds like a good plan also.  I have heard that you want to drill the Twisted strong.  I track pretty low, so a RICO should be a strong drilling for me (I hope).  Just read your profile, that is amazing that you only started bowling in 2006 and are now bowling for Lindenwood.  You must be a natural, plus had good coaching.

In my profile i gave a shout-out to 3 people who got me to where I am in bowling now.  I have the Oringial Inerno with a RICO drill and it is amazing.  It is stronger than my cell.  Do you go to Tim at A+ Bowling to get your equipment dilled?

well lakeside will definitely not play as hard at BZC.  I am not sure of the patters at BZC yet, but I believe we will definitely vote out cheetah.  I personally would like to see shark and viper, but shark is the wrong pattern to have at BZC since it is extremely difficult there.  i would lke to see scorpion and viper as well over at BZC.

Greg,
Ever since I bowled in the 2ballchallenge 2 years ago on Sport patterns, Tim has been drilling my stuff.  I think I'm going to try vent holes on these 2 balls as I always seem to have to open up the thumbs and then put in a bunch of tape before I get a clean release.  I think it is do to having a vacuum in the hole.

Ric,
I think I might also just go with the RICO on the Sidewinder and drill the Twisted with pin under ring and somewhere around 45 degree PSA to PAP.  Any suggestions on top weights and pin out distances for that setup?

i have a TF right now with a 5 inch pin with the pin 1 o'clock to the ring finger, cg kicked out and MB by thumb with weight hole btw cg and mb and i love it.  the ball goes long and turns hard and hooks a ton.  mogators, what are you specs on your ball?  if close, you are more than welcome to throw my twisted to get an idea of what you want to do.

Greg,
Thanks for the offer.  My specs are in my profile, except sizes.  Thumb is about 63/64 but not sure now because Tim has been drilling oval thumbs for me now.  Not sure off the top of my head what grip sizes are, but the thumb size usually keeps me from being able to throw any elses stuff.  Let me know if you think we are close.  What days are you in the shop?
