Specs on Sting Zone?
« on: September 21, 2008, 01:31:17 AM »
Anybody know what a Sting Zone's specs are? Saw a bunch of these on EBay but can't find the ball in Brunswick's international section.

Basically the same dynamics as a T-zone with PK17 for a cover.

Thanks. Got a message it was basically a Power Groove.

No, it is not.

T-Zone does not have the flip blocks that a Power Groove has. This has the same core as the T-Zone,or Target Zone, plastic ball - pancake core - NO CORE!

The flip blocks in the PG give it the potential for 4"+ of flare. This has the potential for maybe an inch and you must use side, top and finger weights. They have a serious impact on the performance of this ball.

Say Charles, did you look at the pic that Gunny posted the link to? Some kind of weird little bell shaped thing hanging from the pin. I see from the pic the Sting doesn't have the flip blocks the PG has. Looks like it could be a good ball for burnt up lanes.

Moon -

Though the core shape has changed from the old school pancake cores, but I'm sure it's still dynamically the same thing.  I'd think Brunswick changed to this design to streamline the production process a little bit.

With a smaller nugget like that these balls probably retain their top weight (and dynamics?) better with basic over the label layouts than the pancake cores of old.

the core looks like a small bell...not at all like a pancake.....I've drilled some up. they call it a bullit core.

It has probably the inside of the Urethane Groove - this one used to have a simple pancake like a T-Zone, but the last generation has, together with a polished factory finish, received that core nugget, if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, big B's website only shows the old core/pancake, and the drilling instructions are down. But I have seen a catalogue illustration of the current version that has a different "core" design that's also inside of the Sting Zone.

I agree. With that thingee instead of a pancake core, they can just hang the "core" like they do with all the other true dynamic cores. It's just there to provide weight balance for that removed by drilling holes.

Moon,
I bought one had drilled Pin Axis, for a house that I needed something
with a weak cover, to play out side 5 (lefty). Ball is 13#, starts rolling when it hits the lane...works OK.
I'm probably taking it down to 600 grit, w/BeansSauce polish.

Here's a picture

the ball is a really smooth rolling piece.  good for burnt up heads and, actually burnt up anything.  really nice piece for late in a tourny.  there is a link in my profile of a vid of it if you'd like to see it.
