Absolute's coverstock...how's yours holding up?
« on: January 01, 2006, 02:04:35 PM »
I'm getting some conflicting reports on the loss of reaction from their AI's after several games.  I, for one, clean my equipment after each and every use with a homemade concoction of simple green, lane cleaner and water.  I've used this with a number of different balls including one from Columbia's Tec-death brigade, a Total Chaos, with zero noticable loss of reaction.  So, history is on my side from a cleaning solution and routine maintenance standpoint.  Recently, there's been more than a few folks suffering from a little loss of ball reaction.  What gives?  I don't doubt that these people think that they've lost some punch on their backend.  However, is it due to the fact that other people have purchased the latest "game in a box" sphere and are suffering from small hook syndrome?  I'm thinking about adding another ball to my arsenal(not a Big B label, but they make the coverstock for this "enriched" product), not because my AI has lost it's punch or carry potential.  Just because I can.  I'm not looking to re-invent the wheel.  I've done this several times throughout the last two or three years.  I'm bowling well with a ball(299-209-300-279 my last four), and have chosen to invest some money in a new pill.  More times than not, it's turned out great.  Besides, if this new ball deosn't pan out, the AI won't hold a grudge.  And she'll have all of the ball's potential that was there from day one at my disposal.

Therein lies my question.

I've heard from some folks that they can't stand the ball due to it's loss of performance shortly into it's lifespan.  Whereas I've got well in excess of 150 games on this ball and it's as good as the day I first used it.  Peculiar.  I wonder how it can be such a vast discrepancy from one bowler to the next.

Got my Absolute last summer and it's still as strong as when I got it. I bowl maybe 60-80 games a week 50% of which are using the AI so that's like 800 games in total and it's been baked twice.

Mine has too many games to count on it, baked twice and no loss of reaction.  Got it right when they got put out, still one of the best balls i've ever owned.

My Shock & Awe (Activator+) is now 2 months old and starts tracking out - but no loss of reaction so far. In fact, I think it becomes more controllable when the surface breaks in a bit, and it worked for me on flodd to medium-dry conditions. But I am also carefully watching ball reaction to seen how long the ball will keep up its killer performance...

I doubt the ball is dying after 10-20 games.  My guess who be a 220 grit under the polish is causing the problem.  You burn off the polish and only the 220 is there.  It would tame the backend down and change the reaction dramatically out of box.

I had the AI for 60 games or so, I hit with 400 and high gloss.  The only reason I sold it was b/c it was supposed to be BETTER than the OI.  For me it wasn't....

If you read my post I have tried extremes and everywhere inbetween my ball is dead after 15 games. And if your theory that the polish is burning off why would one bowlers polish burn off and anothers doesnt? LOL

I have 2 absolute infernos with about 300 games on them and they still perform very well.

Easy, more friction.  Bowler A, bowls in a drier house on wood lanes.  He is also a high rev player, so high revs with dry boards means more friction.  More friction, means more heat, removing the polish quicker.

Bowler B, less rotation, on a harder surface equals less friction and longer cover prep life.
