Possible Blem
« on: December 20, 2004, 10:52:39 AM »
I bought a new Red/Teal PG last Tuesday.  It is drilled 5 x 4, my axis coordinates are 5 1/2 right, 1/2 up.  The pin is above my fingers, not exactly above my bridge but not above my ring finger either, more like inbetween the two.

The ball is hitting the thumb hole all the way down the lane, if I play up the back of the ball.  If I turn it, it goes longer and then starts thumping.  The only way to get it off the thumb hole is to spin the heck out of it.

I emailed Tom Tomaras at Brunswick.  Do you guys think this ones a blem??  I threw my Inferno, even my XXXL with no thumping.

Thoughts???

Sounds more like a drilling/layout error...where pin is it is causing the ball to flare over the holes.

I don't believe so, I've had numerous other balls with the pin further left than this one without this problem.  I had an HPH with the pin under the MIDDLE finger.  I never once flared over the thumb.

Thanks VT.

I thought about that.  It all "feels" the same but I will have it checked out to be sure.

I still don't think that would doesn't explain why the ball thumps down the lane around 40-45 feet.

Correct me if I am wrong, but if I were to spin the ball then that would lower my track making my axis closer to the pin.  So, the possiblity of thumping should/would be less.

Now, if my track somehow rose 1" my axis would then be an 1" further right, like 6 1/2 right, 1/2 up.  That would put the pin 6 1/2 or alittle more from my axis.  That would increase my changes of thumping.  Do you know of any reason why or how my track could rise almost an 1"??

Maybe you have a mismarked C.G.  Where is the C.G located?  We have had the problem with Brunswick balls coming in with multiple punches in the C.G. area.  Usually we measure in a straight line from "B" down 4 inches and if the dot is there we weigh it to make sure it is the true C.G.

Andrew,

Check where the CG is, as DP3 indicated.
Remember that even if the CG was mismarked (driller should have checked), you can move the bowtie upwards by drilling a weight hole in the thumb positive quadrant, 3" or more below your PAP. Even if the side weight goes negative, it will normally move the bowtie up, PLUS cause earlier flare and hook, which is not terrible with a Red/Teal PG.

The CG is down below my ring.

Andrew,

Please take the ball back to your ball driller and check to make sure the CG was marked properly to begin with. I have found one Power Groove with a mismarked CG and a few others with double punched CG's. If it appears that you have gotten one with a problem, have your shop return it to the distributor for replacement. Brunswick will always stand behind product that has a manufacturing defect. With 1000's of balls being produced per month, we know that there will always be a few foul ups here and there, every ball company experiences it.

Let us know how it turns out.
