2" pin, 4 3/4" span, pin stack under ring with mass bias at 5:00, weight hole to balance to 3/4oz side. Dull out of box.
Conditions: Wood lanes with moderate carry down, 7 to 7 pattern, heavy mids and about 20' and buff to 35-37', carry down to 40-42' (pretty bad oil)
My Release: Hi-rev, medium speed, 30 deg tilt. Playing 25 cross 15 to 5.
Results: When I first threw the ball, I had to ask the front desk if they oiled too much tonight. The ball did not turn in the backend at all. Moved right, played 15 to 2 and found the pocket with good results. After about 12 balls, I had to start moving left. Assuming the lanes were breaking down, I had adjust back to 25 in 4 frames. Now I had the whole lane. Tugged 25 to 20 out to 15 and finished good, swung 25 to 12 out to 2 and recovered! Hard hitting, lots of area. Sped it up, slowed it down, left a 4 pin every now and then, but no 10 pins. Very pleased

Ball had a 2 1/2" pin and 3 oz top weight pre drilling - put pin under and to right of ring finger (about 4:30 from center of ring finger hole) and stacked CG under it, a bit to the right and below midline slightly - specs were 4 3/4 x 4 1/4. Mass Bias to right of thumbhole about 1 1/2" in strong position. Ball had 1 3/4 side weight after drilling, so drew a line from Center of Grip through CG to 4 1/2" (not my VAL) and popped a 57 hole there, 2" deep.

Alter Ego is definitely a new reaction for the columbia family. Ball revs up hard on the backend and gives a hard backend more similar to what other stronger mass bias balls give. The backend is very pronounced and easy to determine. Dull out of the box, the ball loses no energy playing deep on the lane - moved in past 20 in league and the ball kept coming and kept hitting. The only reason I switched to my Detour (read Detour review) is because I wanted to see what it could do playing deep, which is where it would shine as well.

Ball: Pin 3 7/8 from PAP 1 1/2 above midline MB is on my VAL about 2.5 inches down----surface is box.

Lane Conditions: various, but normally THS

Reaction: EARLY!!!!! and very continuous.

HOOK: I have only thrown a few balls that will cover as many boards as this ball does in oil. If you are on a light pattern it better at the very least have head oil to get it down the lane. 9.7

Control: If you have enough oil to get this ball down the lane it is very controllable. One big strong arc from start to finish. Eliminates the problem of spotty backends. HOWEVER.....if you hit dry too quick it will either take off left or roll out. 9.0

Hit: Good strong impact. Because it is such a strong arc if you try to use it when there is not enough oil you will often leave 9 pins. When it hits it sends the pins a little higher than I like, but it is strong at the pins. 8.5

Readability: On a THS it is not too bad if you can get deep enough and still have enough left on the ball after it hits the dry boards. There are better choices to read the lanes with, but there certianly are worse. 7.5

Overall: STRONG ball. Side by Side with my buddy's Throttle this ball easily handles oil better. Certianly handles more than the Full Throttle. One good thing about this ball being asymetrical is that you can control the reaction shape better. With an identical pin position to what I have and then placing the MB left of the thumb this thing would get down the lane much better.

Put enough games on it to review this one. Drilled this one up like i did my old triton heat.. Pin under ring, CG swung, MB on VAL. small, deep hole to get this back to legal.. Matched this up to my animal. Alter is around 4 feet longer than my animal, but much stronger on the back. First shot I ever threw was a blower 7-10. It needs oil up front. Any sign of break-down, and it needs the bag. I need really long and flat oil....Around 40 feet plus and this ball is golden for me.

Not the strongest in oil on the market, but gets the job well done. Can't wait to compare it to the Bully!!!

I tested this thing out after picking it up from friend D Pat. Works awesome with head oil and shot 256 game 1. Love the reaction. Compared this with new throttle up and this one is stronger but still great arc. Love this one.
UPDATE! 7/13 I bowl a 274 with this ball in practice. It was cool. MY FAVORITE BALL EVER. Will always love this thing and it rips racks for me all the time in my league. Just shot 708 654 and 644 with it consecutively, which has allowed me to average 222 for 3 weeks. I'm at 210 right now. I really have found that this is a good solid benchmark ball. Seems quite smooth on most shots. Great oil ball for tournaments.

I am a 16 yr old male who has been bowling for 4 years. Bought a second hand alter-ego from my coach, 15 pounds, pin under ring finger. i believe i play the conditions used in the 40th amf world cup, 2004.

this ball hits VERY HARD if you find the sweet spot. messengers are rampant. splits are almost non-existant. beautiful colours on the ball. this ball creates tremendous pin action, even though my revs aren't that high.. probably 250-300. i am a stroker playing 2nd arrow straight down the lane with a slight hook into the pocket. threw my high game of 275 just yesterday. amazing ball. 30usd well spent!

got this ball from sniper206(thanx snipe!!!) and i absolutely love it! on longer house shots, this ball works wonders, it does need head oil though, and if u dont have any, u better know how to loft cuz this ball will take a left turn into the 1-2. so beware, otherwise, compared to the v2 strong/r(also from sniper206), it is weaker on the backend, but carries longer down the lane. this is a great ball by columbia.

this is the second part of my review. i got to throw this ball in league last night cuz we had a flood in the middle of the lane. anywho, i didnt make the first game, and the outsides were breaking down quick, according to my teammates. so i played around the 15-17 boards, i threw my first two frames of the second game(practice shots)and the ball didnt carry very well, so i changed my hand position, and i had the next 5 in a row, a 9/ and 2 more strikes and a 7 count to finish with a 231( i know, its not a great score...)second game for me(3rd game of league) i had to move a couple boards left. didnt like the dry, i had one shot that went too far right into the dry, and it went thru the nose. so i moved a little more, got some more strikes in the hole, with great consistency, then i finished moving right a board, and throwing my polished flash force to finish with 216, and 622 on the night.

overall:

love the colors of the ball, core/cover combo, consitsency at the pindeck, smooth roll down the lane, and ball has great carry! keeps pins low, making for great messengers!

the only dislike is this ball NEEDS OIL!!!! whether its head oil, or oil in the midlane, this ball needs oil, otherwise it will not perform like columbia designed it to.

thanx all for reading! i hope this helps in a decision to get a fabulous med/heavy to heavy oil ball, made by columbia 300!

This is the first asymmetrical ball that I really like. Why this ball wasn't as big a seller, I will never know. I will be buying two more before they are all gone. So much power at the break point with the continous roll through the pin deck. First 3 games (244,244,244... with the last 2 games in a tournament). You will definitly need head oil. Polishing will help on the medium patterns, but by then you should be using something less aggressive than this ball. You should not be disappointed in its performance. Mid priced with a lot of potential. A real sleeper from Columbia300..

Here we are over 4 yrs later and this is still one of the best balls Ive owned for oilier conditions. Refresh: #14 pin under mid/finger, mb 1.5" from thumb, weight hole on axis.

Thursday nite league brunswick synthetics ob 5 out, heads/mids are tight with clean backends. Had problems with my VG and Seige.Pull this out the closet and played 15 to 10/8 board mild belly. Awesome recovery and excellent carry for a midpriced asymetrical. I swear this ball preformed better than my departed VG.

If it wasn't for the color, it would have sold big. This ball is an A+ with ego.
