I bought this ball for when the lanes are to dry to roll my resurgence. I must say this ball is perfect for when the resurgence is breaking to hard. You can roll the same line and it will be right in the pocket. I rolled a 300 the second week I used this ball. The is an excellent ball for the price.

I picked this ball up to give me more angle to the pocket when my buzzsaw xl just wasn't digging in and getting to the pocket and it does exactly what Columbia say's. It reads early and never stops coming. If I throw this ball the way I should, it's ten sticks in the pit.. I went from a 193 avg. to a 205 avg. with it. I left it oob finish but have noticed I need to keep the shell clean. It does suck up the oil. If you notice a little less hook just give it a little bake job and it's right back to new. I know this ball helped me out.

Other -I think this is the ball that introduced the "new" Columbia 300 after being acquired by Ebonite. When I was researching the ball, I found a quote from Chris Barnes saying this ball could handle about 80% of the lane conditions he saw, and I found that to be true. This ball at 4000 abralon required me playing a deep inside line on light oil, but otherwise worked fine on any conditions.

What really amazed me about the Rival was how forgiving it is. With this drill I got good length and a strong midlane roll. But most important, if I threw it wide it would make it back from far out there, and held the line very good on shots I pulled inside.

This would make a great benchmark ball for anybody. Although they discontinued it, they kept the line going with the Arch and Perfect Rivals. And C300 continues to crank out excellent balls.

Typical House Shot usually, but have played in tournament and all kegel shots with great results.

BALL REACTION

Length: Very good to excellent

Back End: Strong, but when oil is pushed down can be a bit weak.

Overall Hook: Strong when needs to be

Breakpoint Shape: Varies between a nice smooth arc to a sharper arc, but no skid/flip sharp reactions

COMMENTS

Likes: Awesome benchmark ball. Has given me my first 300 and first 800. the 4000 abralon requires me to play deep inside most the time, usually throwing over board 37-20 on THC (light-med oil). I'll bet if I had another one shined it would prove to be an unstoppable combination. Also, with my low speed and high rev rate it has very good length and a strong midlane roll, like others have suggested. 8 out of 10 bad shots seem to find the pocket just fine, I can't complain with that.

Dislikes: None. I wish it was not discontinued.
