The ROCK STAR is the perfect compliment to the Rock Solid and Rock Pearl
with its excellent length and smooth hook. The ball was developed with the
league bowler in mind as it provides a strong, even arcing ball motion for
maximum control. The ball is ideal for common wet/dry lane conditions due to
its smooth arcing motion. Like the ROCKS, the ROCK STAR features Columbia's
exclusive TEC2  (patent pending) shell. TEC2 features an enhanced
lane-gripping additive that bites through oil without hollow glass
microspheres or hard particles found in other balls. In addition to the low
Rg of 2.511, the ROCK STAR has a medium-low differential of .035, making it
very driller friendly. You'll find the hook potential of the ROCK STAR to be
between the Rock Solid and Rock Pearl. The ROCK STAR offers 3-5 inches of
flare and a hook rating of 23.

My Rock Star is drilled with the pin to the right of the ring finger, but slightly above (NE to fingerhole).  The CG is on the midline, kicked out about 3 1/2 inches putting the final specs at 4 1/2 by 2 1/2.  It is a good hook and set drill pattern for a ball that is built to hook and set.

I bowled with on on numerous lanes.  Wood with Guardian, synthetic (3 types) synthetic with guardian, straight wood (old).  The ball gives a same reaction of hook and set no matter what shot they put out, making it very reliable in getting to the pocket.when the backends are fresh, the ball sets up.  On carrydown, it arcs.  The ball is always dependable.

This could very well be the perfect bowling ball.  You get exceptional control and great smoothness through the heads, and a hard hitting but controllable backend reaction.  The Rock Star does a great job of setting up in the backend, especially when the backs are freshly stripped, without overreacting.  For a particle ball, it carries very nicely when you move inside.  A definite keeper by Columbia.

I have to say right out that this ball reacts just like a very very agressive Blue Pearl Pulse.  It has tons of hit, with tons of control.  The lower differential of this ball with the out of box surface, and the TEC2 coverstock give you a great ball for when your Rock Solid starts to peter out and your unable to open up the lane.  I give this ball an 8 for all around, and a 9 for a ball to go to between the fresh squad balls, and the pearl go long balls.

Drilled my Rock Star with a 5x5 drill pattern. This ball is exactly what the specs say it should be, it is a bit longer than the Rock Solid, and a bit sooner hooking than the Pearl Rock. The Rock Star bites the lane as hard as any Rock, but tends to work better with some carrydown as compared to the Pearl Rock. When the head breakdown, this ball clears the heads better than the Rock Solid. Tonight was my 3rd time using the ball, and I bowled 813 with it. Totally impressed, and I thought the Rock Solid was a good ball, this ball might be right along with it.

First, the layout. The pin is 4.5 from my axis and the cg is 2 inches. Chris's axis is 5 3/4. Obviously this is a very week layout. Based on this the ball had a stronger reaction at the mid-lane then my rock solid. The ball continued to finish strong in the backend even while bowling on three second shift conditions in 3 different centers. I am always impressd with Columbia's releases, but in this case I am highly impressed because they went away from their previous cores and went with a more dynamic core. I just wonder how much this ball will hook given a stronger layout. It's scarey!

On a scale of 1-10, I would give the ball a 9. It will fit into just about every bowlers bag.

For review purposes, I put more than average revs on the ball, and have average speed. My PAP is 4 3/4 X 1/2 down. Therefore, I have an inverted track. This creates early roll which is why in most reviews you will read that the layouts of my equipment will be no less than 4 X 4.

My Rock Star is drilled 5 X 5.  To begin, the pin was out about 2 1/2 inches.  I have been very pleased with this ball.  It gets through the heads very clean.  The backend reaction of it is very predictable.  This is unlike my experience with the Rock Pearl.  The Rock Star turns up fairly hard, but with a very strong arcing motion.  This allows me to play a little deeper and still have confidence that the ball will react on the backend with enough energy left to hit the pocket with much power.  Currently, this is my most hooking ball in my arsenal.  It has been a pleasant addition.

I have thrown this ball on several conditions with it working best when there is little carrydown.  However, it also performs very well when there is some carrydown.  It is not your flood ball, but will handle most conditions well.

After trying a friend's ball I decided to try one of these for myself.  I started off with a 5" pin and average top weight and drilled it "free-spin" leverage...a good aggressive stacked leverage that helps the ball react in the back.  This ball is a strong hooking ball and isn't as skid/snappy as some of the other high hooking equipment that I have thrown.  **Please check my profile for my style and typical house shot**

I have found this ball to be very versatile on a wide range of shots and conditions.  Ball carries from every angle and seemingly every type of hit.  Keeps the pins very low!  I typically find myself around 15 out to 5 with this ball on a typical house shot.  I have tried to through a friends rock solid to get see the difference and would agree this ball hooks less but with a smoother hook, later break and in my opinion a better hit.  Overall a solid 9 out of 10 and a great addition to the ball market from Columbia.

I bought this ball a few weeks ago. Here are the stats; I am a rightie, above average ball speed, a little above average revs. The ball is drilled with the pin above the ring finger. ( Drilling A, that is suggested by Columbia)I left it in the " out of box" condition. I have thrown this ball on my house shot and two tournament shots. Low series of them has been 675. This ball is so smooth, it gets through the heads really well, and has such a nice break to the pocket. The carry has been great, it rips the rack on light hits and tosses out the ten pin on the half hits.  It even has done well on some of the high hits, tripping the four pin. It is definitely my first ball out of the bag.  Great job Columbia.

Well, here is an update to my original review on the Rock Star, posted on 1/30/01. I have now used this ball for seven weeks on my league shot and for those weeks I have averaged 237( I was averaging 217, now up to 221). I had my first 300 and an 800 series with this ball. I did use it in a couple of tournaments and it has worked really well. Although, I have decided that it is not the ball for really heavy oil for me, it works great on the shot in my league which is a "wet dry" condition. It hits very hard and is very predictable. I give it a solid 9 out of 10. Do not be afraid to get this winner.

Rock Star: It is a very strong ball, gets a sharp angle and carries very well. I`ve seen reports on its control but I`m a Tweener and still get too much over/under with it. I would believe this is a marvelous ball for a straighter player due to its strenght which you can compare to the strongest around. This I have drilled 1:30 Leverage and it outhooks the Rock easily which I have drilled Lev. 3 3/8 Stack. I dont like to mention balls of other marks so will just say there are few out there with this strenght. Very good ball indeed, great carry, also will need oil to use it, not for drier conditions.

A good offering from Columbia.

I got a bit more length out of this one that I'd originally hoped.  Then again, I throw it too hard.  I drilled it with the pin above the fingers and kicked the CG 2" out at 3 o'clock.  Needed a small balance hole.

It's great on oil with clean backends.  If the backends are sloppy, bring on the scotchbrite pad.  A good ball for early house leagues or the first 2 games in the late league.

Check my profile for style, and specs.
I have my Rock Star drilled label-leveraged, in box condition.  Control is the one word that should come to your mind when talking about the Rock Star.  This is the smoothest transitioning ball I have thrown in recent months.  The only weakness is when there is carry-down, in which the motor(core) is not strong enough to make the turn in the oil.  However, if there are some backends, or the track has begun to dry out, this is an excellent choice to score a lot with.  Nice ball Columbia.

I picked this ball up several weeks ago after finding my Zone Control to be of no use on oily lanes.  I picked this ball up because it was listed as having an "aggresive" cover stock and had good reviews. I had it drilled for leverage using Columbia's pattern B 2 with a 4x3 3/8 pin x cg position (offset from the grip).

This ball quickly demonstrated stronger strike potential than the Zone Control.  It also demonstrated much more dramatic as well as differnt hooking patterns. On fresh lanes with a clean back end this ball ignores any amount of oil in the heads and will come back to the pocket from the edge even with low revs. Very consistant and forgiving. Unfortunately, if there is carry down, that all goes away and you end up playing down the edge hoping for dry stuff or rolling a fairly strait shot. In box polish at low revs it does not work well on a bad back end.  Not even slowing way down brings it back to the pocket. As the oil dries it is hard to keep a consistant roll as it grabs more and more lane and hooks. It needs a dry strech to make its turn.  In the next couple of weeks Im going to take a litte scotch brite pad to it and see if that gives a little better grip/turn in carry down (my Tuesday league has lots to practice on!).  Ill let you know how that goes!

ROCK STAR

House Condition

2-3 inch pin

Ball is drilled max leverage.  I really wanted to see this balls potential.  This ball does exactly what Columbia says it will do.  Perfect ball for house conditions.  I'm satisified with the balls reaction overall.  Nice skid/roll reaction.  Not a heavy oil ball.  Sometimes it'll get a little flippy in the heads and i'll have to hit the surface with some black magic to tame the surface.  Good overall ball.  8.5 out of 10!
