Rock Star
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
The ROCK STAR is the perfect compliment to the Rock Solid and Rock Pearl
with its excellent length and smooth hook. The ball was developed with the
league bowler in mind as it provides a strong, even arcing ball motion for
maximum control. The ball is ideal for common wet/dry lane conditions due to
its smooth arcing motion. Like the ROCKS, the ROCK STAR features Columbia's
exclusive TEC2  (patent pending) shell. TEC2 features an enhanced
lane-gripping additive that bites through oil without hollow glass
microspheres or hard particles found in other balls. In addition to the low
Rg of 2.511, the ROCK STAR has a medium-low differential of .035, making it
very driller friendly. You'll find the hook potential of the ROCK STAR to be
between the Rock Solid and Rock Pearl. The ROCK STAR offers 3-5 inches of
flare and a hook rating of 23.

I have the ball laid out in what was called the "strong hook" drilling in the pamphlet that came with the ball.  The pin is slightly above my ring finger. The house shot is med-heavy oil, from 8 board to 8 board, for the first 20ft, the from 12 to 12 board for the next 20ft then stripped and buffed backends.  The shot doesn't change night to night b/c of the new machine that the alley bought which strips on the way down and then oils coming back. I love to crank the ball, when i first got the ball it wouldn't move through the oil, now that the shine has been knocked off, it takes through the oil like nobody's business.  It finishes HARD, but if you want to see the snap at the end of the lane then this ball is not for you. You see it take off but it just arcs, and finishes with a fury. I love it, but when the heads break down I move to the 40 board and through to the 25 out to about  the 12 sometimes further conditions depending, and that ball gets back with no problem.  I tend to leave ten pins if i get it wide in the dry and let it take off TOO hard, it plows everything left and leaves a ten. I like the ball for all conditions but those of you who have to have a different ball for every different shot you probibly won't want it on heavy oil (my favorite) or light stuff(give me back my BEAST, PLEASE

good luck and i think you will enjoy this ball, don't worry if it doesn't ove out of the box. throw 10 games and it'll get going.

This is my second review and I have heard alot of stuff
about the TEC death phenomenon, although I am very skeptical
about it. I have a Rock Star drilled 4x4. I bowl on a medium
condition with high revs and throw around 14 mph. This ball is
a fantastic control ball. I use it when my Classic rock is
hooking too much. It won't turn the corner so if you miss outside
pray for a good break. But if you are accurate with this ball it
will carry the corners all night long. I would highly recommend
this ball to anyone, especially if you are just looking for one ball
that is useful on many conditions.

I am a 17 year old junior in Ball Park Lanes(a wood surfaced house). I bought the Rock Star from a friend over the summer and the ball has been a part of my bowling arsenal for about 7 months. When I bowled with this ball in a  my summer league, I quickly saw this as one of the most versatile balls in my arsenal. The first night I used the ball in a adult summer beginners league I bowled a 227 game. For many of you this is nothing, but for someone who has been bowling for three years this is a great accomplishment. That night i went on to shoot a then adult-league high 599 series. Ever since though I have not used the ball as much because of the terrible conditions I have been on in my junior league i.e. (lanes completely dry or oiled to the heads).

This is a great ball for your typical house condition preferably medium oil. I am a 15mph stroker so if u r this type of player this ball is for you. And if u are not this type of player give it a try. It may be the best thing you have ever thrown!!

I bought this ball from a friend about 10 months ago when i really started getting into bowling, i didnt have the money to get a new ball but i needed something stronger, my basics were very off, and this ball helped me straighten then out.  Although ive gotten other balls since, this ball is still a Active ball in my Arsenal.  It is a good ball for a 3-5 board swing if it is not polished cause itll roll out.

I have this laid out with the pin above the finger to give good length for my spinner release. Polished, the ball gets exactly that with a mild arc. I hit it with 3M fine and superfine for the JG it St. Louis to smooth it out a bit, but lost most of the reaction in the process. I did get a controllable reaction, but the ball was squirty on the outside part of the Sport shot, where I play most of the time. Admittedly, not where the ball was designed to be played, but an important drawback. Still, on a block house shot, a killer ball. If I had to do it again, I might get a little earlier rolling layout.

Kinda late for a revirew on this ball but I wanted to add my comment as well. For a beginner, this is a great ball. When i first started bowling, I went through many balls and nothing really did the job like this one. The ball taught me how to bowl better. How? well... this ball loves the pocket. Even if I mess up on a throw it seems to know to hook more or less and get the job done. The ball also helps with understanding ball control and what type of bowler you are. After a year with this ball, you'd be ready for any ball and know which balls out there are right for you. I actually have a Rock ON and a Rock Star. There both great balls. Rock on is unpolished, good for oily lanes and the rock star good for mid-dry lanes. The ball would carry very well down the lane then hook just enough to hit the pocket. Can't complain! These balls are still in my bag, Faithfull spare balls now.
