 U Turn Particle
U-Turn Particle is the strongest mid price Columbia 300 ball ever! This ball has the same core as the U-Turn coupled with our UFO (Ultimate Friction in Oil) particle to create more friction in the body of the oil pattern. This ball will slow down sooner before changing directions which will give you a smoother, more controlled reaction through the pin deck. It was designed for medium to heavy conditions and is a big star on the wet/dry conditions that are so popular today.

I drilled up the U-Turn and U-Turn particle the same day, and WOW what a great duo.  The Particle is drilled up with a 4" pin under ring, and cg stable.  This ball shines on your normal Top Hat house shot.  This is one of the most versitle particle balls I have thrown.  The reaction shape is good length, with a strong turn into the pocket.  I have even thrown on a heavy oiled 10-out pattern, and was still able to get it back with enough energy to carry well.  The 2 U-Turns are a great match, I started with the Particle, standing 25 & playing 15 to 8 at the break.  2 games later after the fronts wore a bit, I switched to the Reactive and played the same shot, and was still in the pocket.

Columbia U-Turn Particle:

Ball Specs
The ball being drilled was a 3” pin out with 3.00 oz top weight.
Drilling: Pin 4 1/2" from PAP and Mb 5 1/4" from PAP (approximately 60 degrees) pin is Above Ring finger, 3" above grip midline. No weight Hole

Bowler Information:
Track diameter is 10 1/2.
PAP is measured at 5 1/4 over and 3/8" up.
Average ball speed (foul line to head pin) is 17 mph.
Axis rotation is typically 90 degrees
Initial rev rate is typically 300 rpm, "Tweener"
Lane Condition and Pattern:
AMF Bowlero, HPL 9000 Panel. Oil Pattern: Medium to oily lane condition with fairly clean backends. Tapered Block from edge board to edge board.

REVIEW:
Nice ball with nice hit on the pins. It does what Columbia says it would do. Gets through the fronts very clean, revs quick on the backends and has a strong but smooth backends. It reminds me of a sanded Columbia Detour, it should the core is about the same. This is a ball that does not rev quick off the hand, but by the breakpoint it revs up real nice and has a nice hard hit.

Compared to other Balls:

Columbia Big Bully: The Big Bully revs up quicker, creates more of a loop reaction and has a stronger backend. The U-Turn Particle revs later off the hand and tends to be more of a hockey stick reaction, more down and in.

Overall: Great ball for medium to oily lanes, or bowlers that roll more up the back of the ball.

Thanks for reading my review.

Drilled - 5x4, pin middle of span, low small Xhole
Coverstock - box condition (slightly shined with Cleaner)

Prior reviews of this ball are pretty accurate. Its an energy retaining particle. Doesnt rev off the hand but picks up in the mids and backend. The hit is way above average for particles. The backend motion is hard swooping arc, making it easy to open up the lane. A great compliment to the EPX.

Theres several players using it in the Metroplex on longer patterns. Columbia is definitely doing something right. Ive had success with the EPX-T1, Professional, and Detour. Great balls from Columbia300.

I used my dads U Turn today to try it out. This ball can hook. The first game I was throwin up 5, threw a spare and missed so I moved over. This ball came to the pocket and made a sound a 6lb ball beening 2 fingered by Arnold S. But who cares about sound when the ball still manages to hit the pocket. The U Turn is about to make me make a U Turn from Brunswick to Columbia. Nah, that won't happen, theres room in my bag for both companies.

COMMENTS
Carry - Average to above average carry.
Likes - This ball is very smooth rolling, has consistent carry, with no over/under problems. Hits fairly hard and is almost never jumpy. Just a nice, swooping arc that doesn't quit until it's in the pit.
Dislikes - Ball is very hard, it is difficult to adjust the surface. Also butt-ugly (looks like a big, round hemmoroid). Ball doesn't look anything like the pictures posted on the Columbia site or the ball review sites. (See video http://media.putfile.com/Columbia-300-U-Ugly)

Update - 4/27/07 - I felt that the ball wasn't aggressive enough so I put it on the ball spinner and went over it with a 300 Abralon pad. The surface was still relatively smooth after going over it and I wasn't sure how it would react. It held fairly long for a particle and made a strong finish into the pocket. The best part was if I missed my mark the ball still found the pocket and carried. I started using it in the 10th frame of my first game and struck out for a 199. Next game was a 249 (won the pots across the board and netted just under $800 after paying off my horses) and a 204 for the final game. I only average in the 180s so this was a stellar series for me.

Don't let the low price tag fool you; this a nice reacting, predicatable ball for the money.  And, it hits with power too.

A right-hander, my release is somewhere in between forward and side roll, and I can play down and in or the big hook if necessary.  The U-Turn particle was drilled with my typical house condition in mind; 36 feet of oil, heavy dead center, heavy 7 and out. Typically playing down and in, this ball does not roll out and doesn't quit until it reaches the pocket.  Because of this, this ball creates area for you.
This ball also served me well at the Nationals in Corpus Christi, where I played center arrow out to 10 and consistently hit the pocket.  This is a versatile ball, and easy on the pocket book for a change!

As you will see with alot of my reviews I use Columbia products for years and this ball is very similar to my overdrive review.  Ball worked well first year or two, sanded when the ball started to stop reacting but ball still does not hook nearly as good as it did out of the box new.  I throw down and in which is what this ball is supposed to be meant for but it lost steam the older it got.  At the national shot I was embarrased to try to throw this ball, wash out after washout unless i took 2 mph off my shot.
