I Can't Power Drive 55
« on: December 14, 2006, 04:22:48 AM »
I bought a 15lb Power Drive (polished version) earlier this year to replace my 14lb Dr. Jekyll, and I’m confused. I read reviews about the PD having a strong backend reaction, but it doesn’t really hook a lot for me in any condition. In fact, the DJ was a much stronger ball for me when I was still using it. Both were drilled label, so I would assume that the PD’s stronger core and cover would give it some extra pop juice, but I haven’t figured it out after a few months. Now, it works well for me when I play it up the back because it won’t make a crazy move and rolls through the pocket like a monster. But if I try to come around the ball more and swing it out, it doesn’t really recover and hits the pocket light. So, what is this ball supposed to be - Captain Hook or a steamroller?

It should give you a hard arc and it was made for medium oil. What lane surface and how much oil are you bowling on?

I bowl league at one place and practice at another closer to my house, and both use Pro Anvilane. The place I bowl league oils with a THS, and the practice house is usually pretty dry with the occasional carry down depending on how many people were throwing plastics before I got there. Now, I'm not saying the ball isn't good or anything because I've bowled 200's with it; I've just never got the hard arc reaction like some reviews say so it's always confused me. If I use it at league and try to bounce it off the wall, it doesn't come back that strong, and I'll get some 5 pin leaves from deflection. But if I play the thing on a more direct line, it will hit the backend, make its few board move while getting into a wicked roll, and explode the pins. So I don't know what the deal is. Should I have gone more hardcore with the drilling or something for it to have the hard arc instead of the super roll?

The drilling is with the pin up and to the right of my ring finger about 1/4 inch or so, and the cg kind of kicked out from my grip to the right a little.

Well if your leaving 5 pins sounds like your release needs some help and its not the balls issue. But if you break the shell down a little with a grey pad it should hook a little more.  I too have a power drive and for me it only works good when i need to play deep inside, it's one of my favorites??? Mine is drilled 5 1/2 x 3 3/8 from pap with a hole 2 inches down from pap.

Do you notice this problem with your other balls in your arsenal or is it just this one?

The Power Drive had one of the highest backend ratings for C300 until the Action Packed and Apogee came out. I've found that if the backends are clean this ball really moves on the backend. If the backends have some carrydown or there is alot of oil up front the ball may not come on as hard on the back. It is Vaccine afterall which is a particle cover so the reaction is most likely going to be a hard arc and not a sideways snap. If your tilt is sideways then the ball can go sideways.

If you're leaving 5 pins with it, odds are its either burning up on the backend and rolling out or your rev rate isn't high enough to play an inside line and cover boards.

Well, I just finished up league tonight and actually had more recovery from the PD than I've ever seen. I bowled a 190 with it in the third game for my high of the night (I have a 170 average this season). The middle stayed fairly oily, and we had a good bit of dry to the right of the second arrow because there were 6 righties with reactives opening up the side, plus the back stayed pretty clean. I tried coming around the ball more while standing at the center dot and swinging it out a couple boards right of second arrow. I had a couple of accidental wide shots that went outside of the first arrow, and they came back to the pocket hard for strikes. I kept it polished tonight, so maybe that in conjunction with more revs and skirting a bit of middle oil allowed it to store enough energy to make bounce on in off the opened up side.

Angelfire, our drillings are pretty similar, except your CG is a bit more out of the grip than mine. And is that a weight hole on yours to the right of the CG, or something on the photo? Mine doesn't have a weight hole.

Thanks to everyone who posted, because now I've got a better idea of what to match my ball up with so I can make it more versatile for my game.
