Rival to compliment a Black Widow Bite?
« on: April 24, 2008, 09:43:31 AM »
Hey guys, drilled similarly, how do the reactions of these two balls compare with each other? I'm thinking of getting a Rival to compliment a Black Widow Bite when lanes break down a bit.

These two balls are on the opposite end of the bowling ball spectrum's with regards to type of reaction. The Black Widow Bite is a very aggressive bowling ball which was made for big skid flip hooking action, where the Rival is a perfect benchmark bowling ball, designed to give the bowler a smooth, readable arc to the pocket.

Ar they good compliments? I believe that they are. If you were to drill them the same you will see a little more length out of the Bite with way more backend action where the Rival will be a little earlier and give a smooth, yet powerful arc of the spot.

Hm, interesting. What ball in the Columbia lineup would be closer in reaction, but slightly weaker?

Maybe the Momentum?  Although probably too weak for what you're trying to get.  I don't think the rival is exactly smooth.  It's actually more of a controlled backend ball that reads the mids pretty well.  As for something that gets down the lane like the BWB, I would have to suggest something from Storm, such as the Rapid Fire or Gravity Shift. Other than that you may as well get the BW Pearl if you don't already have it.

If you want a ball that is similar in reaction to your Bite but for dryer condition try the Black Widow Pearl. It's a great hitting ball and will compliment the Bite. The Rival is also a great ball but gives you a different reaction. It is a little stronger than the Black Widow Pearl with early midlane roll. Carries light hits extremely well. Other balls to consider: the Raid, Rapid Fire or Black Widow Solid. I have them all. Good Luck!

The Rival is more of a midlane roll and arc type of reaction than either the Bite or the BWP.  It depends on what you want in a complement.  If you're looking for a smoother rolling ball than the Bite for when the backends are flying, the Rival is probably a good choice.  If you're just looking for a Bite that you can use on less oil, than the Black Widow Pearl is the better option.
