Ball Stats question
« on: February 25, 2006, 12:33:49 AM »
Hi,

I've been perusing the ball selection on the Columbia website and I'm a bit confused at what their hook stats mean.  I'm looking for a ball that moves less than their Spirit, for dry lanes, and I'm looking at the Scout right now.  This is what confuses me:

Scout:

Overall Hook: 20
Hook Oil: 10
Hook Dry: 10

Spirit:

Overall Hook: 16
Hook Oil: 7
Hook Dry: 32

I imagine this is a function of the ball's cover and/or core, but its confusing to me that the Scout has an Overall Hook greater than the Spirit, but much less Hook Dry.  Is there anyone that can technically explain this?

well way to look at there stats is like this.  The spirit is a very low hook in the front part of the lane. Pretty much skid then when it hits dry its going to snap and fly on the backend.  The black scout urethane you are looking at is going to have just a very smooth reaction not reall snappy more of a arc shape.  Another ball to look at within the the columbia line is the scout-R and the Scout High-flare urethane for dry lane conditions.

i would forget about looking at hook ratings. every company uses a different standard,   i would ask your ball driller.  it sounds like you need a ball that does not over re act on dry lanes with moving backends.  if this be so,  look for balls with a lower diff.  .020 to .035
SUCH AS  DESERT HEAT,  BLACK ICE,  STAURN,  U-TURN
PLUS THESE BALL WILL CARRY BETTER THAN A SCOUT.
the hook ratings on balls remind me of two little kids playing on the street.
my dad is bigger than your dad.  their all trying to out do each other.
however the specs of the ball tell the real story.

BOA_ELF:  That actually makes a bit more sense.  It sounds like the Overall Hook rating can be more or less thrown out, because this will differ greatly depending on the lane conditions.

jls31316:  I realize there are very few stats you can actually port from manufacturer to manufacturer.  I started a thread in Miscellaneous (hope the link works):

http://www.ballreviews.com/Forum/Replies.asp?TopicID=116243&ForumID=16&CategoryID=5

...where I asked what stats you could take to compare balls from different munfacturers.  I'm trying to compare balls from several different manufacturers (the purpose of this thread is to identify which one from Columbia I will compare to others).  From Roto-Grip I was actually looking at the Mercury, not the Saturn.  So Diff is what I need to be looking at?  Does this take into account the Core and Cover, or should I take those into account separately?

THE COVER FOR SURE,  BECAUSE ALL REACTIVES ARE DIFFERENT.
SHAPE OF CORES TO A POINT,  BUT KNOWING THE DIFF. SHOULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.  EXAMPLE  IF THE BALL YOUR USING IS A HIGH DIFF.  .055,  THAN TRY TO MATCH IT WITH A LOWER DIFF.  .020 TO MAYBE .O35.   LOT OF GOOD MODELS OUT THERE
RIGHT NOW,  IN OUR AREA,  THESE LOW DIFF. BALLS SELL WELL,  MOST HOUSE'S ARE LIGHTER OIL PATTERNS.  AS LONG AS THERE IS GOOD BACKENDS, THE LOW DIFF. BALL WORK WELL.

SORRY FOR THE CAPS,   WE USE CAPS IN ALL OUR FILES   AND SOMETIMES I FORGET
TO GO TO LOWER CASE.

ok Now back then I think to get a over all hook rating they used a different system as to how many boards it would cover on a shot that it was ment for. Now I remember that the scout used to have a overall rating of like 11 untill they changed things on the site. Now they just add the two oil and dry ratings to give you the rating. Things have changed but a spirit will hook more then a scout. Not much but more.
