Saying that ALL Columbia balls do this is just plain false. I've seen many different balls from every company have periodic problems with cracking. This is caused from either hairline fractures caused by wear and tear, type of glue being used, driling too deep or pitches causing finger holes to meet.
The fact is that there are too many variables to just narrow it down to one thing that causes EVERY ball to crack. I've kept all of my balls in my car and never had a problem with ANY ball and I live in So Cal with heat up to 100 degrees sometimes.
My theory is that the glue used causes most cracking. The glue gets into the pours of the coverstock and expands and contracts causing hairline fractures which in turn can get worse in any number of ways. Maybe the reason I've never had problems with cracking around my fingers is the fact that I don't use inserts which means NO GLUE.
Anyway, just have your Pro Shop guy fix it and don't worry about it.
