when people say "Black Magic", they usually mean the polish. If you do also, a polish is not a cleaner. small wonder you are getting too much length. Sorry to be harsh about this, but i suggest you not listen any longer to the person who recommended this to you. If you are not using the polish, then using the ball on oil, can impart a light sheen to the ball; with use, the original 1200 grit finish can get modified. If that's the case, the ball should be sanded with 1200 grit sandpaper, every 25 - 40 games or so, depending on its use level. Indicators are lack of proper reaction or just the look of the ball.
Black Magic is made by Ultimate products; they have an excellent cleaner called Black Magic Rejuvenator. Since the action is a dull ball which can absorb oil like a sponge, it should be cleaned after every league session, BEFORE you put the ball back into the bag.
Stock finish is 1200 grit sanded; simply ask your pro shop to restore it to that texture with normal wet/dry silicon carbide sandpaper: 600 grit - 1000 grt, then 1200 grit paper. It should take 3 1/2 - 5 minutes and cost $10-15.
