Figured out cracking problem

I Think...  
Today I gave 4 four of my balls hot water baths. But before I looked over them all for cracking around the finger. Two of them already had cracks around the figures and the other two did not. After I gave all the balls hot water baths I noticed the other two had cracks around the ring fingers as well. I can't say why they cracked after the bath, but next time I'll try taking the finger grips out and see what happens.

scolding hot water, or what?

it could be the glue in the finger-tip grips mixing with the soap, causing a cracking type.

if they were cracking, i wouldn;'t give them a bath.. lol

They probably were there originally and now that its clean you can see them easier. I've had that happen on a ball I soaked.

Ball coverstocks are porous at a microscopic level.  I wonder if in it's porous state the coverstocks have the ability to expand and contract a small amount.

Since C300 stuff likes to crack around the finger inserts, is the glue soaking into the pores and not letting the coverstock expand and contract as it normally  able to?  Instead it's now going to crack because it's not as flexible.

Just a crazy thought.

Machine101, it was scolding hot water...

Crankenstein300 I doubt it was there before I cleaned it. As I said before I inspected the ball beforehand. Columbia being notorious for cracking finger, I really keep an I eye out for it.

J Mac that sounds like a logical answer to all this. I was thinking that myself but I don't have any way of confirming it......

they always tell you not to use scolding hot.. they tell you to use hot water, but you can put your finger or hand in for about 10 seconds without burning it.

i would seriously stop doing it, because its just making it worse im assuming.

that hot water will get the oil out, but it may cause the ball to hairline crack in the fingers, which i understand.

I've tried scolding water ("Bad water, bad!") - it just doesn't listen, it's like water under the bridge.

However for cleaning bowling balls I never use scalding water, merely quite hot.

There's one guy on here that says using scolding hot water cracked one of his balls.  I think you are supposed to be able to put your hand in the water.

I've used scolding hot water on an EPX with no problems by the way.....

I don't have access to a thermometer right now but I will attempt to solve this:

Scolding Hot - YEAAAAOWCH!  I just burned my hand off!  Sweet god!  
Quite Hot - This is kind of hot when I put my hand in it!  But I can put my hand in...
Warm - Is this hot?  I can't really tell...  Maybe it's too cold.
