Big Shot what are they thinking?
« on: January 16, 2007, 08:21:27 AM »
I have had some success with several Columbia balls in the past, but I am now starting to doubt some of their logic.
How come the new Big Shot is finished using the new TCS finishing process and is sanded (4000 sanded) but hooks less than the polished (3000 grit compound) Action Attack?  I see the core numbers are slightly different, but come on, is the Optima coverstock really different or just a weak remake of something else?

Sounds like a Big Shot in the dark to me

Where do people get their information from???

The new cover Optima is a reactive pearl. It was designed to respond much quicker to the dry boards resulting in an angular move on the backend, unique to any recent Columbia ball.

Isn't the new cover supposed to be 75% Epoxy?  I want to see if there are any cracking issues.

Short Answer YES
Black Widow one of the best selling balls this year sure out hooked the Hawg balls

Angular One another great seller, lets see yep, it out hooked the Infinite One

New Brunswick Ball  Fury   Hmmm  yep out hooks the Total Inferno and Oh yea the Total outhooked the Radical.

I am seeing a pattern here of balls that sell well hook more not less. That is why I am confused with the Big Shot approach.  I know not everyone needs more hook BUT more hook SELLS.  It really sells if it hooks in the backend.  Maybe that is part of the reason I am not seeing anymore Columbia balls around at tournaments anymore.

Check Columbia's website that is where the info came from and just so you know both balls are pearl. In my experience polish balls are more angular than sanded balls when hitting the dry part of the lane, but that is only common sense.

Maybe this will help you understand where I am coming from a little better

Our intent with the Big Shot is to produce a long and more repsonsive reaction down the lane. With our new TCS system and Optima cover we have acheived that.

Yes the Optima cover is MUCH different than M802 Friction Plus, it's cleaner and will have more motion off the spot.

No, the new Optima cover isn't Epoxy. It's a brand new blend designed for todays league bowler.

Let's talk about hook or should I say over all hook.  Most people consider hook with back end motion and when we test balls we test hook from front to back of the lane.  This is tested on our CATS system in our test center.

I can't speak for other brands but our Attack will HOOK more than our Big shot and when I say hook I mean overall hook.  Our Big Shot will have more back end motion than the Attack.  I hope this helps and please feel free to ask me more.

Alterebo, obviously any sanded ball is going to have was less backend then a polished ball, as it uses all of its energy early, compared to a polished ball that saves it all late. Not every next ball in a line has to hook more. If you look at the entire inferno series, not just the last 2 of the what 10? You will see that every other ball hooked more. As some were solids and some were pearls. The black widow pearl that is supposed to come out any day now will "hook more" on the back end, but in total boards will probably have the exact same amount of hook as the original widow. Just a different kind of hook. And the widow is a mid line ball anyways. The No Mercy is their high line ball and that for sure out hooks the widow but isn't selling nearly as many as the black widow. But it hooks more, so why aren't they selling more mr. alterebo? And who needs all this big hooking stuff anyways, just grab yourself a super trooper, and thats all you will ever need!

alterebo you have done jack for homework, just look at the coverstock on Attack it has a particle blend in it and particle is stronger than reactive, The Attack is dull out of box and the Big Shot is polished which makes attack stronger earlier, Not every new ball has to hook more than the previous if you need more hook, you need more help than a ball can give you! Angular One doesn't out hook Infinte One the Infinte One ROLLS EARLY on the lane and Angular One rolls late and hooks harder on the Dry!! You really shoud start doing your homework. Any dull ball appears to hook less cause it rolls sooner. there are different types of reactions other than hook the lane. Go home and play

I've seen many of the angular ones thrown, and they are 3-4 boards less than the infinite ones. The angular one was released to give more of an angular reaction.

Maybe he tried to do his homework but doesn't understand!  Last time I checked it's BallReviews.com a bowling site designed to help all levels of bowlers.  Cut some slack to someone who makes a post to try and learn.  Because this is the internet you essentially have levels from pre-school all the way up to Pro.  If you feel he hasn't done his homework just don't post.

I thought TCS 4000 Grit was like 4000 abralon which would make it dull. Columbia states on the their website that there is no polish for the "Big Shot" or the "Action Attack".

3000 Grit Compound vs. 4000 Grit TCS.
What is the difference between the two?

How does someone obtain a 3000 Grit Compound Finish on a Bowling Ball at home? (If they were to have a spinner)

To get 3000 you need the TM3000 PAD. That is a perfect 3000 finish. Also 4000 is not really dull, it is very smooth and almost a polishless polish. A 4000 finish will roll threw the oil like a polished ball but will not snap as hard to the dry as a polished ball. It a finish that gives you a smooth reaction. Also you say the black widow is a great selling ball. Yet nobody has yet to comment on how the addition of a top flip block to a 3-4 year old core is makeing the Black widow so awsome.

Also I do belive that all the m80 covers (other then the M80 Pk something) are reactive, with no particle.
