Columbia Action...for oily lanes?

Hi all,

I am a southpaw stroker with medium revs and a low track...been trying to change my release to get a higher track so I am in transition so to speak...

Been using a Brunswick Mega Zone S from their International series for medium conditions and I am now looking for a ball for oily lanes because my Zone just doesn't cut it on oil...

I am interested in a 14lb Columbia Action because its surface is slightly sanded which makes it good for oil from what I hear.

Can anyone give me advice if the Action is suitable for oily lanes?

I have no idea what's with my Action, but it doesn't move a lick. I redrilled it from right hand to left hand, but the plug is not in my track, so I don't think that affects it. I ended up using the ball as a spare ball for my right side spares. I'm not bashing the ball, it's just that I havne't had good experience with it so far, though my coach has one (righty) and it works just fine for him.

The Action should be a good ball for what you want.  I don't have one, but have seen a bunch in use in the PBA/sport oil pattern tournaments that they run around here.  I'm happy with the balls I have for that condition, but if I needed one, the Action would be a ball I would consider.  It reads the patterns well, doesn't over react to the oil/dry transition, and hits well.

fins4ever88, if your Action isn't moving much, you are probably using it on way too little oil.  Just about every oil looks terrible when thrown on dry lanes.  Too many people confuse burn and roll out as a dead or lousy ball.

I did think that, and I'm not completely dismissing the ball. I've only really had it for a week or two now. I've tried to use it on heavier patterns where my The One wasn't working out at all, but the Action was even worse. Slowing up the speed, I was able to get The One moving to the pocket (albeit somewhat weak), but couldn't get the Action to do the same. I'm keeping the ball though, I have a feeling it'll come in handy when I least expect it.

Thank you all for your comments...it is much appreciated.

Just one last question, using the Action on oily lanes, would I be expecting to play a 10-10 line down the second arrow and into the pocket or would I be better off with an inside line to the pocket?

Would this depend on the drilling and layout of the ball? I have been told to drill the ball to let it roll early so that I can use the ball for oilier conditions...

There is no ball designed to play up 10, they are designed to skid then hook then roll... they will move when they see dry... that said some drill patterns do make it easier to play straiter (1:30) and some easier to get deep inside (12:00).  but as a rule you want oil to your left and dry 2 your right... on a standard house shot this would start out as being around up 10 but genraly changes as more games are bowled on the lane.
