Columbia before the purchase by ebonite

Anybody else like the old columbia 300 when it back in san antonio? I have the rival and Messenger Traction and use both of them a lot in a week, and it seems that my rival is "dying". I always clean my equipment with powerhouse energizer cleaner right after i bowl and give it hot water baths every 40 games or so, but the longetivity of the rival falls short of my old messenger. Seems like another ebonite sponge ball to me.

about for the last few years I had been looking for that "miracle" company.  I had always used columbia but they stopped coming out with equipment I was interested in, so I started looking else where.  I tried storm, track, and bought some bowling balls through Visionary.  Visionary was the closest, but it still wasn't quite what I was looking for.  All of a sudden columbia came out with the Action, and I was all of a sudden impressed again, and thinking about giving columbia another shot, then the action packed came out, along with the Jinx, Hijinx, and the Wrath.  I ended up buying a Jinx and a Wrath, just out of sheer curiosity.  I drilled them up, and Viola, there was my miracle reaction and carry.  I had been looking for it and finally found it.  unfortunately I didn't have the money at the time to buy more equipment but I wasn't in a hurry, after all columbia was putting out good stuff again.  less than 6 months after I bought the Jinx and the Wrath, I get the sad news that Columbia has been bought out by Ebonite.  I just about cried.

I'm not saying the new stuff isn't as good as the old columbia, I mean the Rival looks amazing, the momentum has more backend than a lot of equipment out there, and the Resurgance... Wow.  But I still wish Columbia hadn't gotten bought out, I was really falling in love with their equipment.

It is amazing all the talk I hear about balls dying.  Every ball tends to smooth out over time.  The more aggressive the coverstock the faster they smooth out, so cleaner and hot water is preventative.  The coverstock still needs to be roughed up too.

The Rival is the best all around ball that I have thrown in years.

A water bath every 40 games seems, for me to be too often. You will drain the ball of the "Plasticize". The more you drain, the more the ball will behave like an urethane ball.

I personally didnt like the old Columbia300 equipment. I bought the Rival and didnt like it. As soon as i hit it with a touch of polish this became my bench mark ball. Since then i shot 747 with it, then 708 two weeks later with the Resurgence. Also have a Momentum and a Wrath Dead Flush now. My shot and carry has never looked as good as it does now, and it is all due to the new Columbia300 equipment....

I've never really had a problem with balls dying from any manufacturer. Although new, my Momentum carries like a soggy marshmellow. I could shoot at a rack without a 10 pin on the deck and as soon as it hit the pins, I bet something would stand in it's place just to spite me

The Messenger Traction was an "Old San Antonio" ball, but it had particles in it. So it needs a bunch of TLC and probably needs some oil removal to restore it.

Before you give any ball a hot water bath, you should sand it to around 400 grit to "open up the pores", so to speak. Remove it from the bath before the water cools down too much. Wipe it off and put it back into hot water. This should be done at least 2 -3 times. Restore the surface and let it sit for at least 2 days to let all the water evaporate, before using it.

Yes, I always liked Columbia balls. Still have a bunch of them. Super-Flex and its related resins do last and, like Brunswick's PK 18 & PK 17, are easily rejuvenated.  Solid Super-Flex is a great cover. Pearlized polished SF is one of the hardest hitting coverstocks. It has been used by not only Columbia, but Track, AMF, MoRich, Lane#1, Circle Athletics and the original Dyno-Thane balls.

Oh, how I wish I could get my hands on some of the original DT balls made by Columbia!!!

Not meaning to hi-jack this tread but I know a Pro Shop here in Sweden and they put a NIB ball in a Rejuvinator to check if any of this "plasticize" would come out.

They left the ball in there for about 8 hours and the ball was completly dry when they took it out..

No "plasticize" what so ever..

$10 says the ball is "dying" because there isn't enough oil on the condition in which you are using your Rival.  It isn't really "dying", its only "burning up", losing energy, and not making the turn toward the pocket.

If you notice, most of the time when someone says their ball is "dying", its usually a ball that needs more oil to get maximum reaction.  When a manufacturer says a ball is from "heavy oil", that is the condition it is best suited for.  It doesn't mean it will hook more on medium oil and even more on light oil.  In fact, the opposite happens.

Like others, I have never had a ball to "die" on me except when I wasn't using it on the right condition and even then it wasn't "dying", it was only "burning up"...

Just remember that there are 3 companies that still make balls from "The old San Antonio" and I've heard that the AMF and 900 Global covers are very similar to the old Columbia balls.
