Black Chaos - best ball in my bag right now
« on: September 03, 2009, 08:54:43 AM »
I started fall league last week. In addition to my current arsenal (see profile), I brought along two old school orbs (Black Chaos & Cuda 2000) just for fun and more options. Glad I did.

I guess the center either changed the shot a little, or did some maintenance on the lane machine, cause the lanes were flooded. I couldn't get anything from my current arsenal to move, no matter how much I adjusted. So I broke out the Chaos...WOW. I forgot how awesome this ball is. It's the most aggressive ball of all my equipment. I shot 687 last week, and used it again last night for a 725.

Despite buying it used from my teammate a few years ago, and has been plugged & re-drilled 3 times, this ball still checks up nice and hits like a Mack truck - just like the Columbia of old I cherish and miss so much. They just don't make em like they used to.

Chaos was a particle ball so it will hook on just about anything, and sometimes the best look comes from the older gear. I have noticed that trend in the last few years.

Love the older Columbia balls. On a THS my Backyard bully or Action Packed rarely fails to deliver. My Big shot is the second ball out of by bag as the shot breaks down.I all so have a Professional that I am struggling with on sport shots. The over/under is mind blowing.Really like the new AMF lines, great equipment for the money. These older balls seem to last much longer then the newer stuff that is produced. If you bowl in a couple of leagues and do some tourneys the newer equipment only lasts 75 to 100 games it seems, while the older stuff never gives trouble with ball death.

I think part of that had to do with how the majority of balls were made back then. Most of the older Columbia line didn't use filler, just the core inside of resin. The thicker shells lasted longer and increased the ball's Coefficient of Restitution (CoR), making them hit harder. I rolled some older Ebonite stuff back in the day. The original Nitro Urethane & Nitro/R^2 (squared) were made that way too. But the later Ebonites I owned, like the Turbo/C & Red Wolf Pearl, were made with filler. Those balls were great too, but didn't last very long. Matter of fact, my Red Wolf had to be baked on a regular basis. Eventually it cracked severely as a result.

When I bought my new arsenal last year, I wanted that same core/resin combination. I almost went with Legends/Lane Masters, but no pro-shops sold them in my area. And after pricing them online, plus drilling costs, it was more than what I was wanting to pay. So I went with Storm's Thunder line. They're made w/o filler, and they roll awesome and hit hard like the old Columbia's do. After seeing how the lanes have played recently, I've come to the conclusion that either my new arsenal was drilled too weak (stacked leverage) or the Thunder line isn't meant for heavier conditions. I'm leaning towards both, lol.
