Columbia suggest drilling them strong.  I have an EPX Bonanza I'm going to experiment on because I love to go against the grain.  I'm looking for a urethane type reaction to combat the new guardian surface in my home house.  I saw a few pros tear up a tough pattern with guardian overlay a few months back using the EPX T1.

Since you know it's going to be strong anyways, why not just drill it strong?  I doubt you'll be able to tame the nature of this beast.

I just drilled mine up a little bit ago, only have maybe 15 games on it but it is NOT for heavy oil.  Now I have heard that the ball is great for heavy oil.  I didn't drill it up as strong as possible (pin below ring CG kicked out with about 3/4 oz+ sideweight, no X-hole) so that may be a big reason for why it is not as strong as some people say it is.  I have also heard that after you have given it a hot water bath the ball will become stronger, haven't tried that yet.  if I had to compare the ball right now to another ball I have,  it actually compares closest to my old Fab Purple hammer.  the Hammer rolls about 3 feet sooner than the EPX, but other than that they have the same general hook shape and potential.  now I'm not complaining about the ball, I actually really like it, I've been looking for a ball like the old hammers for quite some time now, and I think I've found it.  but if your going to drill up the ball for heavy oil, by all means drill it up as strong as you can.

hope this helps

I have 2 EPXs drilled up.

One EPX is drilled Pin on Axis (PIN about 1/2" off my PAP). Ball has a 1" pin.

The ball does not flare a lot, is great for heavy oil (down and in), hits very hard, carrys well.

The 2nd EPX is drilled stacked leverage (3-3/8 from PAP).

Ball has a lot of back end hooks a ton. Great ball, cover is starting to crumble, not crack around the finger inserts...and the ball has been sitting in a tote, little use.

Both balls are great oilers. .... If you can find oil.

so either axis or leverage are both strong leverage has that much back end maybe i will drill axis just so i can have a even arc i want this ball for when nothing else will hook and for soaking up a nice hole to break out my preferred equipment

The Axis hets into an early roll...Will not recover much of you swing the ball.
Great for heavier oil, ball drilled Axis is great for rolling the ball towards the pocket, does not overreact on the backend, does not deflect much either.
It's very condition specific....you won't bring it if you try to swing it.

The Stacked leverage is good for mediums. I'd recommend the Pin on Axis for heavier oil. Let us know how you like the drilling.

Ball drilled Pin on Axis is low-flaring...flares about 1".
I've never had it roll out.
It will recover, as long as you don't try to swing the whole lane.
You'll be amazed at how much the ball revs, and how it holds pocket drilled axis.

Axis Drilling is a Control drilling which would work on heavy oil.
The Axis drilling is not a big hooking ball....it's a BIG ROLLING ball.

The stacked leverage drilling, flares a lot, and has the most hook potential.
Pin 3-3/8" from PAP has the most opportunity to hook...Hook is not always what you want on heavy oil. If you are bowling on swamp conditions, you want a ball to  roll, not hook.

Of course everyone has a different definition of heavy oil.

I agree.

And I think the EPX is more of a rolling rather than hooking ball.  May be why they recommend a strong drilling.
