Chris Barnes really worth the money
« on: January 08, 2007, 12:31:27 AM »
My question is this, is Chris Barnes really worth the money Columbis put up for him?  To date he has made only one show (I believe) in the 06-07 season.  Last year he did about the same give or take one or two shows and a title.  Is he really worth 1 milion dollars to advertise for Columbia.

I recall columbia used to be the best ball manufacter in the world and now the company really doesnt have anything it produces that is a "Benchmark ball". Look at morich, brunswick, ebonite, storm.  All these companies have a line up that is really great and works.

What are your opinions on this?

* I used to love Columbia but when the EPX came out that is when I lost all faith in this company.  What happened to the Tour Boss line and Chaos brands yes they are old but even AMF got smart and reintroduced a Retro Ball.

I never said that Chris Barnes was not good or a hack.  I like chris however, considering he made a name for himself with brunwick it is diffcult to see him surpassing his previous accolades.

I consider this though for columbia.  Tiger put Nike on the map why?  He wins tournaments, a lot of them.  He sales the products because he wins.  For ever tournament how many golfers go out and purchase those clubs, balls, putters, etc.  Same here with bowling wouldn't you not agree that if Chris won more tournaments, I mean dominate 5 or 6 in a row. That you would see an increase in sales for the ball he used.  Reason being that if he won with that equipment then "any" person could.

Just a thought

In my opinion,Chris Barnes is going to make ANY brand look like pure gold.If you base your opinion on his success on the first eight tournaments of the year even Chris would tell you he hasn't met his expectations. But the season is less than half over and the fact is there are still three majors left on the schedule,I think you should reserve your judgement until later in the season.Just a note Chris is 10th in points,13th in earnings and cashed in every tournament he's entered,we should all be so sub-standard.So is he worth the money?I would say he is.
I don't compare myself and my game to a pros. Just because a pro uses a particular brand on a tour pattern and has success with it doesn't mean it will work for me.I don't buy Columbia 300 balls because Chris Barnes is on their staff or Storm because Pete Weber uses them, nor would I buy Nike golf equipment because Tiger uses them.My biggest influence are my peers that I bowl with and my ball driller(a ball is only as good as the person who drills it)
That being said,I can find any thing in any manufacturers line up to fit my game, depending on where I bowl and as my profile states I only bowl in one house and one or two local tournament a year.My two cents...

Sometimes it's hard to come onto this site because everyone has different opinions and people are entitled to them. We (Columbia) are working very hard to get the brand back to the top, I do believe that we will get there soon.

As of our Columbia Team (Barnes, Wolfe and O'Neil) they are all great people and very talented bowlers. I'm very fortunate to have the chance to work with such great people. For the Columbia fans that we have and had we greatly appreciate the business and ask you to hang in there with us. The new Big Shot is going to be special.

Thanks again.

All I can say Joe is I hope C300 doesn't fall into the trap of making skid/flip balls where Ebonite/Hammer/MoRich and other asymmetrical manufacturer's  are into today with The One series so your league players are into that skid/flip look.  For one your equipment now is different than many because it has not fallen into that trap.  If, it does C300 has done what many other manufacturer has done this last couple of years.

Scott,

I agree with you that our current line is different from the everyone else and I for one like what we have but it's not what is selling today.  I think if we can diversify the line a little more it will be what the people would like to see.  The Big C equipment is known has great oil balls, something that reads the mid lane very strong and has a very continous backend motion.  It's not known for the side ways motion that is the "hot" look today.  I see numbers across my territory and I know the balls that are the most popular and they are the balls that go sideways down the lane.  Like I said before we are just adding something "new" to the current line to make it better.  Thanks for the input and thanks for the business.

I bowl with a lot of people that think skid/snap is the greatest thing out there.  Hell, I'm even buying my first skid/snap ball because there are certain conditions where that reaction is desired.  I use (or used when I get the Domination and the Total Inferno I ordered) exclusively Columbia, and still have success with the original Wicked and original Jekyll bowling multiple leagues and never having resurfaced either ball.  I think for your average stroker and most tweeners, Columbia has the best balls for that style of play - the only downside is that I cannot find a Columbia ball that I can open up the lane with, which is why I am buying the 2 new balls.  I plan to still use the Columbia stuff first, but I need something that will handle a different lane condition.

If Columbia comes out with a successful skid/snap ball, I think that people like myself will be all over that ball with the success we've had using Columbia equipment.  I don't want to go with other companies, I just don't have a choice right now.

I understand why C300 needs to move into that segment on marketing their equipment Joe.  Thanks for the response.

I am hopeful, C300 doesn't totally go away from what really makes them different in my mind from many manufacturers.

Your ball response off the hand is such a nice feature.

BTW....I am in your area WI and Rob Bailey drills my stuff.  IMO the best driller in the Madison, WI area.

Glad you participate on BR.

You ladies play your cards right you just might get to meet the whole gang

Chad does so much work behind the scenes and he is truely one of the many people that make the Columbia brand and even though he's a St. Louis Cardinal fan he's alright.

Can you describe "benchmark" ??  I'm guessing your a house hack that averages 180 on a wall and wouldn't know a good ball if it hit you on your nose.  Also it's apparent you don't pay attention to the line because the Wrath series is using the Ti Boss core's??
Lastly you going to loose faith in a company for trying to advance the technology of the game with the Epx ball???  If anything it shows that Columbia is trying to make our game better.  Get a clue buddy..I'm out!

Frank,

Why can't you just answer the question that was asked and not get personal in your post. He asked a question and you go off calling him names. People like you are why alot of people do not ask or answer questions on here. They do not want to be ripped for asking what they think is a legitimate question. Even your profile says "Just your typical league hack with no clue!"

Cbjdc, Personally I think Barnes is worth whatever a company is willing to pay him. Is Alex Rodriguiz worth what the Yankess are paying him? I do nto think so, but they are willing to pay him and that is what matters. If the company is willing to pay him the million, then yes that is what he is worth. Another company might only pay him half a million.

BOWLING IS FUN NO MATTER WHAT YOU SCORE. BUT A 300 IS ALWAYS NICE.

STRIKE ZONE, ONSLAUGHT & PYRO. STAND 22 AND THROW 10 OUT TO 5 AND CRUSH THE POCKET. AT LEAST THAT IS THE PLAN OF THE NIGHT...

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD BOWLING!!!

Well Cb,
I'm not gonna jump on you for your opinion and truthfully, I ask myself the same question.  In my mind, pros that are on staff to make ball company's products look good.  And for a majority of PBA fans that comes through Sunday's telecasts, having stated that, just bowling in the PBA events and have a great look with bad breaks isn't seen by us(fans).  For the big $$$ that Barnes is getting, I don't think he is worth it.  Sure Columbia has their commercial about him and how much money he has made with their equipment, but for a new fan <2 seasons, would be like "who is that guy??"

But if you think about it, every ball company has someone on their staff that is guaranteed to give them that FREE(well not really free b/c they pay the pros. But not for TV time) publicity on TV.

Storm- PDW, Ryan Shafer
Morich- Walter Ray
Brunswick- Parker Bohn, Mika, Sean Rash(newbie), and Brad Angelo
Ebonite- Tommy Jones, and more than likely Patrick Allen
Hammer- Doug Kent, Tony Reyes
Track- Wes Malott

Now, these are the people that you have seen on TV, are they not? And the comment comes up that consumers only want skid/flip balls...well that is what is on TV...You have seen all of the aforementioned staffers, but the only place you can see Barnes is in commercials and Skills challenges.  Now before any goes bashing me, I am not a Chris Barnes hater, I actually like him.  But the question wasn't about liking or disliking.  It was whether or not he is worth the money that he gets from Columbia and IMO, I do not believe so.
