Columbia 300 EPX T1 cracked.....
« on: January 02, 2006, 10:20:45 AM »
A friend of mine won this ball on a bet with a local hot shot. He was happy to get it, I didnt like what i was hearing about the ball from previous reports. So i take a look at it, 4" pin grey in color NIB. He got it drilled last teusday. Last thursday he used it in leauge. 1st game, 245, hooked a ton. He was loving the ball. 2nd game hes got the 1st 4, throws the 5th shot, strike but a totally different hit then the last 4 strikes. I threw my shot and cleared the deck I noticed some peices on the deck, plus my buddies ball has still not returned to the ball rack yet. I made a call to the deck for a ball return. 15 minutes later they come from out back carrying a bucket. Its my friends ball with half the shell broken off the core. Not even 2 games and the cover breaks apart. Hes contacted Columbia 300 about it, they want him to take pictures and to email them the pics, probably end up getting  a new ball from them. Thought this was interesting so id share it.

Dont balls get tested before they are released?? If they really did some good testing they might have found this problem before hand and fixed it.

from what i have heard( and it could be wrong) the epx was not "real-world" tested. all the testing was done in a controled environment. most of the problems are ebing reported from everyday people who take their balls in and out of their house, bowling center and their cars. all the tempature changes affect the coverstock.

If the one shot hit differently....is it possible that maybe the ball hit something on the deck to cause the cracking?

I have witnessed that type of thing happening to several different types of bowling equipment.

The only thing I could think of is the shell seperated from the core after the 4th ball in the second game then broke on impact on the next shot or hit something in the pit then showered the peices all over the place in the pit and on the deck. Too much to know for sure really. Its a shame that Columbia 300 is having so much trouble with this ball, from the little ive seen it in action, it looks like it could be something to look out for with a problemless version #2.

Despite the websites claim of "eight years" of research, it almost seems like they were in a hurry to get it out the door before someone else put out an epoxy ball.  It'd give them the most-hooking-ball crown by quite a lot and as we all know from reading this site, all bowlers want is more hook.

Seems weird, though, given the reports that Brian Voss threw one at a demo or trade show or something and it hooked off the lane after his TNT took out the 10-pin.  That was what, two years ago?  If they had test balls and formulations available then, seems like they should have had time to iron out the kinks.

It makes you wonder if other big manufacturers like Brunswick, Storm, or Ebonite don't have similar research coverstocks but after seeing the EPX fiasco (every week someone else's is cracking or breaking), they canned it until it was truly ready.

Im not bashing the idea or the problems this ball has. Im pretty positive that every brand has that 1 bad ball that shouldnt have been rushed so fast. For brunswick, wide reports are pointing to the Absolute Inferno with some reporting the ball losing most of its hook after 20-30 games on it. Just seemed like this ball really shouldnt have been released till it was truely tested in the real world or at least in the real world in house.

in lou of the USBC and Ball Manufacturers Testing, did you know the USBC bowling machine, has never thrown a 900?

That's because it burns up its line faster than any pro or amateur could ever hope to.  You may hit your mark every time, but when we talk about sport shots having a 1" mark instead of a 5" area like a house shot, consider how much of the ball actually contacts the lane.  1/8", maybe?  1/64"?  You can throw a dozen shots through that 1" mark and never cross the same track twice.  That line holds up for those dozen shots.  Throwbot can hit a 1/8" every time and after a half-dozen shots, there simply isn't any oil there.
