Buddies price = $80, don't know if that includes shipping.  My pro shop many times can't get balls for the same price.  So, assume $90-100, add $40 for drilling and 10-15 for slugs/grips, so $150 isn't out of line.

While I'd love $107, it's not realistic for most people.  Assuming you're getting the ball for Buddies cost, you're only charging $5-10 for grips/slug, and $20 for your time for drilling?  You're either doing a large volume, or doing people a big favor.

Let's do the math work this backwards to figure out the mark-up assuming the following:

Sugested Retail: $101.90
Sales Tax rate: 5%
Cost : $65
Shipping: $5
Thumb slug cost: $5
Finger grips cost: $4
Drilling: $30 (30 min labor, assuming a shop labor rate of $60/hr)

$107 (Gross Sale Price out the door)

Expenses:
-$ 05.10 (Sales tax)
-$ 65.00 (Ball cost)
-$ 05.00 (Shipping)
-$ 05.00 (Slug cost)
-$ 04.00 (Finger grips cost)
-$ 30.00 (Drilling cost)
-$114.10 (Total shop expenses)

Looks to me like the shops expenses already exceed the gross sale price by $7.10, I don't see anything resembling mark-up.  So to sell this particular ball at the suggested retail, the proshop must forfeit any mark-up whatsoever and reduce his drilling fees.  

Just an objective look at the pricing of a typical, 1st quality Columbia Freeze bowling ball, based on some logical assumptions.

i run a "small" shop.  if your shop is paying more for a ball than buddies is selling them for, you need to find a new distributor.  buddies sells "most" of their balls for about $15 over my cost.  

i'll tell you honestly that a freeze costs me $63, and i retail it for $107 plus tax, grips included, slug extra, and a free game to try it out.  i dont do anyone favors because my volume is lower, so its not easy to hide those favors.

alot depends on your business model, your region, and your expenses.  some brick shops sell lets say a VG for $189 out the door, i cant come close to that with my standard markup.

And the $114.10 does not include rent or the pro shop operator's salary and other miscellaneous overhead.  Please do not begrudge your pro shop operator a decent living wage.

we sell freezes $119.95 before grips and slugs but every ball purchase the customer gets a maintenance card for one new set of grips, a resurface or revivor and a polish.

$15 is about right.  Larger shipping accounts should be able to ship a ball for $10-20.  Average out to $15 - some you'll make more on and some you may lose a little.

So at $107 you're only "making" $43?

Mind if I ask where you're located?  

I'm the DC area and drilling is now up to around $60.  Add another $15 for slug and inserts.

I haven't been to a shop in a while, but I imagine the Freeze would sell in the $129-149 range - not including slug & inserts.

What is your OTD price for a VG?


I imagine if I could get drilling in the $30-40 range I wouldn't have gone out and bought my own drilling equipment.  Well, that and the fact that I don't really like paying for spans that vary by 1/8" or more.

The shop I go to essentially takes the his cost of the ball, adds 50 on for drilling and thats the list price, grips, slug and tax on top of it. This may be expensive to a lot of people but when you do damn good work I don't mind paying a little extra.

Think it was 119.99 retail.

some are goning to hate me ... My freeze drilled out the door was $90.00.

it was and wasn't a "pro shop" per se.. was the house i used to bowl in a lot and the main guy sells stuff as a pro shop but he also is the main employee of the alley.

surprising it is the best fit of all balls (atleast it seems that way)

My driller will either allow me to buy a ball at cost or bring my own pill and charge me around $35-40 for grips and drilling.  Considering I try to bring him as much business as possible, I feel we're treating each other fairly.  We're also adult enough to know that if the situation changes during each purchase, the price can/will be adjusted accordingly.  All of this combined with the fact that he's damned good at what he does makes it an easy decision for ball purchases and drillings.  Selling a Freeze for more than $120 drilled seems a bit excessive, IMHO.  However, if your driller is also allowing for some coaching along the way or surface adjustments after the sale, those should also be factored in to each person's cost of doing business.

Not going into specifics BUT I am in Calif. The sales tax in my area is 9.25%, not even close to the 5% example used. I had to fly up to Washington state to save over $3000 on a new car purchase from the BEST dealer price within 300 miles of my home. I have a pro shop that is not making me rich by any means but my prices here are much higher than some of the examples used in this post. I have also seen examples of NIB prices INCLUDING SHIPPING here that are lower than my destributor base price! I guess it's all about the area you live in! Now to answer the post.. FREEZE out the door $158.36 drilled no grips/slug.

I'm in WA too and 150ish sounds about accurate.  High end about 230-260(mostly 240 or 250 though).

Was the savings based on sales tax, or just a difference in price because of the area?  Most states charge the sales tax when titling the vehicle, so if you bought it in another state you still have to pay your state sales tax and then file for a refund from the state you purchased it - or sometimes the dealer can collect the tax for your state.

Paid $80 online/free shipping. Local Pro shop drilled, plugs and inserts were $50.00. $130.00 is still good for a great piece! It acts like a 200$ ball.

Columbia/DiLaura sets the MSRP at $124.95 here in Mi. Not sure if that is the case in every region. This is what I charge, grips/slugs included. Switchgrip is extra.

I think this conversation is being skewed by some of us on here who are friends with pro shop operators and therefore are recieving a discount. My friends don't pay full retail at my shop, but the going price is for walk-up customers. If they buy multiple balls I will usually discount from there.

In our shop we charge $114.95 plus tax ($121.85 total). This price includes grips and slugs.

This is the best ball you can buy for the money.

Great topic. Probably the best ball out there for the price, we have sold more of these than any other ball. $143.95 + grips/slug, however, House League Bowlers get 10% Off, and I have sold these to several Good Customers as low as $120 complete. Also, we sell All new balls to any/all PBA Cardholders at our Cost, +40 to drill, and 15 more for grips/slug combo, thus making a Freeze $117. Our pricing is fair, and tiered. The more a person buys, the better pricing they receive. All new ball sales include a free coverstock preparation. I am sure many shops operate in a similar manner with similar markups. There are alot of costs, the rent, inventory, and pro shop operators' salaries.

Yeah this is crazy, like the one guy said we have to pay rent and how about the glue that everyone forgets about, yeah at like $5 per bottle and that doesnt last long. $107 that is crazy, and $15 for slug and inserts.

129.95 slug 13.95 inserts 11.95 + tax 168 out the door

Thats is also the problem why pro shops cant make it anymore, we have these retired guys drilling balls for $100 just b/c they need a hobby mean while we are trying to survive on this and when being undercut we cant make it.
