Good beginner ball
« on: January 21, 2018, 02:00:35 PM »
First let me say please have patience with me. Just really started bowling 6 month ago. Before that It was maybe three times in a year then years before going again. Started with what amounts to a 14# house ball. 4 weeks ago I was given a nicer 15# straight ball and wanted to try something different so I had tips put in and started working on my form. Going with the classic handshake throw. On real dry lanes  practicing mid week it has a slight hook and it was perfect however on league night with more oil its as straight as can be so Im looking for a good slight hook ball. Im throwing around 16.5 mph at the pins according to our lanes. I use thumb and two fingers. Trying had on my form so my throw looks more like what the woman pros throw(obviously not as good) as the men tend to rely more on power but Im getting to old for that(45/male have had shoulder problems). Going to drop back to 14# and thinking hard about the 300 nitrous based on reviews and welcome thoughts. Hard to find many pics of the actual ball so also interested in thoughts on colors from people that have seen the ball. Thinking red/silver or black/silver. TY for any thoughts.

The nitrous is one of several entry level pearls out there.  I have a Pyramid Path Rising I got for $70 shipped from bowlingball.com and it is a great ball but hardly can use on conditions I see.  Still these entry level pearls are a good ball to start an arsenal with as you can use them on the burn (reactive balls naturally take oil off lanes over time and in a long block will start to see a lot of early friction, but mild pearls tend to not overreact early) even if later you buy stronger balls.  Plus most people see drier lanes than I do and they can be just the ticket on drier conditions.

TY for the reply. Im not looking for a lot of hook. Was just worried that in heavy oil I wouldn't get any. I guess Im what you call a stroker. Only picking that ball cause of amazon reviews and two other reviews I saw. Realize down the road Im probably going to want more but I didn't want to hate my first new ball. One review said it wasn't good for spares. Any idea why that would be? I thought a low hook ball was good for spares.

Ebonite Cyclone is $79.00 and it offers some cover strength, so medium oil is OK
Stick to a price point for a beginner ball, no need to buy something expensive. The Nitrous is also a very good beginner piece. You can use really any ball for spares as long as you don't try to hook it at them. I wouldn't worry about that for now, get 1 ball and try it out, see if you have fun with it, if you do and want to get better, then maybe buy a separate spare ball.

Yeah you can get a good plastic spare ball for $40 shipped later (lot of pro shops sell them drilled cheap as well).  Might look at that if you find you can't hit the 10 (or 7 if lefty) pin no matter what you try.

Cool good luck and careful as buying balls can get almost as addictive as bowling itself.  :)

OK. Ordering what may I ask? Good luck one way or another. Oh, and welcome to the world of bowling. Enjoy! The "Nitrous" is a very popular ball where I bowl and not for the faint of heart as it does make a strong turn when it hits beyond the mid's. A real nice ball that can be controlled and have been considering one due to the reasonable price of said ball.
Was going to get the nitrous. Didn't order yet cause a friend called with a house problem I had to go help and Im on the way back out again so will be tomorrow. Do you think it will be a mistake for me? I thought since I was a stroker it wouldn't turn to hard but Idk. Never had a reactive ball before. What put that ball ahead on the list for me was reviews on a lot of other beginner balls talked about chipping covers and chunks breaking off. This one didn't have any of that and there was talk like even guys that bowl a lot finding good use of it. Kinda figure it might be trial and error in the long run. My wife wants me to order a ball for her to and said just get that same of what I get but in 12# cause she's only thrown straight also. My personal style throwing/line I like right now is aiming down the second arrow and it gently curving in about 3/4 down with my right foot somewhere around between first and second dot. I know all that will change with ball and conditions but that did well for me with current ball on a super dry lane, unfortuanlly its rarely that dry just mid day in the week when they haven't touched the lane.

To be honestly most entry level weak pearls are largely the same.  If dependability is your main criteria everyone has been saying how long the Storm Mix lasts but then again its going to go straight as its weak urethane.  Nitrous is a good ball from what I hear but can only recommend what I own.  The pyramid brand at bowlingball.com is very affordable and have had nothing but good to say about my Path plastic ball and Path Rising pearl.  That said my gut tells me the Nitrous won't be too much ball for you at all.

Nitrous or Cyclone are both great choices. I probably use the Nitrous a bit more now that I think about it. Cant go wrong with either choice

Thrown approx 20-25 games with it(nitrous 300), some in league and some practice. Pulled a hammy in that time so was down a bit. Thoughts: Very glad I went with 14#,feels better. During practice threw my two best scores, 227 and 237. Bowled one week with a robby brace and liking that (threw the 237 within 5 games with that while still recovering from the pull)

Thoughts on the ball: Durable-still looks good and doesnt feel cheap. Great mid oil or dry. Great spare ball. Rolls early and pretty straight for 3/4 then gently hook at the end. I stand pretty centered give or take depending on oil with right foot on second dot from right and aim for second arrow from right. Had to slow down big time with the pull and have worked on different speeds. A full speed throw for me is 16 mph at the pins. With the pull I got down to 12 mph. Working my way back up I seam to do best at 14.5 give or take to get some hook and best control. Any faster than 15 mph and I lose to much hook and also lose accuracy. This is defiantly not a hard hooking ball but do recommend it for a spare ball-med to dry conditions-or a slower ball speed of 15 mph and under. I really like it as a first ball and thought I leave a review as it was hard to find many. Next year I will probably get one with allittle more hook for the heavy oil.
