green messenger info/help
« on: November 24, 2009, 06:16:08 AM »
I have a green messenger that was my brothers (spans the same - or close enough). It is drilled lable with pin below ring finger.

My pap is 4 3/4 over up 1/2, speed 16 - 18 mph, revs -unknown would guess 280-350.
My normal line (with VE) is Feet 8 boards left of center (drif 3 boards right) laydown ball @ 16 arrows 10 BP 7-5, can tighten and throw down 8.

current arsenal VG,VE,Rising,Hex-plosion,Freeze, and the Green messenger.

The ? is where does this ball fit in. the Rising for me is more of a med oil but is on the verg of being retired (better fit with the VG,VE), the hex could also be retired seems to have its own mind.

All i know about this ball is that oob is matte (600 i think). Also on the lane were my brother used it he would put it in a luster king for as long as he could before bowling (every week he tried to use it). couldn't use it much said it hooked too much for him.

Thanks for the help.

Snowspike

I have a Green Messenger, that I have recommissioned into my arsenal, and am tearing it up with! The past three weeks in my Monday nite league, I''ve shot 679, 681, and 663 with this ball!

In it''s day it was touted as a med/hvy oil piece. These days at best, it''s a medium oil piece. For me, I use it on lite oil conditions. The ball has a light polish on it, and I am just ripping the racks with it.

Our house has changed the shot, gone to a lesser volume of oil, and all of the newer equipment just hooks right off the lanes.

The GM has always been a good control piece with a nice soft arc to it for me, whenever I put hand in it. Generally though, it will give you kind of a hockey  stick reaction, with a "fluffer" release. Lite bulb core, I believe.

In terms of your arsenal, I believe it fits exactly where you list it above, behind the Freeze. I think the Freeze has a similar core shape as well, but a much stronger cover to it. Good luck with yours.

P.S. Very durable SuperFlex cover, is dependable and reliable. Speed control is the key.

what do you think would be a good surface to put on this.  It could use a resurfacing.

i'm thinking 1500 + polish.  I dont have a working luster king around here anymore . the 1 were i bowl on wed nite leave specks/chunks of white all over the ball so thats out.

Depending on layout, your GM will possibly fit above the Freeze.  It is a sneaky hooky ball even on many of today's conditions.  I wish I still had mine.  I had my most success with it using a white scotch brite pad which is about 1000 depending on how old it is.  It put a "polished" look on it and rolled tremendously well.  Whatever you do, do not even put any ball, except plastic, in a Luster King.  They use a wax based polish which will clog the pours of any ball and straighten out the hook in a hurry.  The white specs you are seeing is the wax based polish.

Couldn't have said it better myself, MrTeach!

You are exactly correct, as my GM is very sneaky, hooky also! I recently threw a Street Rod pearl drilled fairly strong, in the oil. I put a good amount of hand in it....and the ball just sailed. It never hooked. I was surprised.

Threw my green messenger and the dang thing hooked as if there were no oil in the middle. Amazing.

Yeah, a 1500 surface on your piece should give you plenty of cover to work with!
