Help w/ Big Shot

Hey guys and gals i have a small problem with my Big Shot.  I bought this ball about a year or so ago from PBA Pro Mike Wolfe. I had it redrilled because the layout on it didnt work for me.  

Right now when i throw it on THS this ball does almost nothing for me when i throw it.  My stats are above avg speed and a ton of revs.  This ball seems like it almost rolls out in a way but im not sure thats the problem.  I think its the layout or maybe the surface.  If any one can help me out it would be greatly appreaciated.  I want to start throwing this ball again because it fits me well.

Pin is roughly right above and to the right of the ring finger ( 1/4 inch or less).  Plug is where it was.

Please help.  I will listen to any suggestions.

1. DO you know what surface is on it now?
2. What ball is working for you on this condition, how is it drilled and is its surface different from stock?
3. Have you been using it for a year? If so, it could need an oil extraction. The last set of COlumbia coverstocks were pretty good oil absorbers. Still with your higher rev rate, it should be hooking some.

My BS (no jokes now) is drilled even stronger, with the pin below and I've tried several different surfaces. In general, it's too much ball for me to control I like less hook, but it's a wonderfully strong and strong hitting ball. So far it always hooks.

This is a strong pearl, that acts more like a lightly shined solid. It usually needs a good deal of oil, but then I don't have a lot of ball speed.

It came 4000 grit (pretty sure it was 4000 grit Abralon).

What is your PAP (axis point)?  Your PAP plays a huge part in this.  Also, I agree with Charlest.  If you have alot of games on it, you may need to extract the oil from it.  Part could also be the lanes.  Just because you are on a THS does not mean that there could be something wrong with the lane machine.  It may not be stripping the backends properly which means there could be some carrydown and therefore the ball never hits anything dry to grab and hook.  This is a common issue with alot of centers during the summer months.  Alot more open play means more oil gets pushed to the pindeck and if the oil machine does not strip it all off, you get what we call "mush".  

First thing first, though.  Give it a hot water bath and see if you get any oil out.  If so, continue soaking in HOT WATER (do not allow the water to cool off or the oil with soak back into the ball) until the oil is completely out.  Take the ball back to the pro shop and freshen the cover back to box finish and then give it a shot.  If you get nothing in response, it could be a lane issue.

Steve,

He answered some of those questions in a private message. Several other balls do hook for him and he has tried several other surface changes.

With his "ton of revs", even if the drill were way off, he should get some decent movement. Mine is a fairly large hooking ball and I don't have his or your rev rate.

I asked him to say exactly how much it hooks. What we often feel is "nothing" is just that because it is so much less than we expected.

I also suggested he have the CG and static checked, just for information's sake and to have a friend, who is more medium rev and ball speed bowler, to throw it.

Kind of a shame that since Columbia is not Columbia any more, that they can't check it for him. (Many manufacturers will have you send them a problematic ball.)

Good news folks i went bowling twice today and brought the Big Shot with me.  It didnt work too bad for me.  Its not going to be my hook monster in my HUGE aresenal, that spot is for my Ebonite NV, but it should fit in nicely as one of my light medium to dry lane balls.  

I played more of a straighter shot with it today, basically playing around second arrow ish maybe a little left of it and putting it out to about the 7-5 area with moderate success.  

I think my little problem with this ball is some what gone but i wish i knew the full potential of this ball.

More of a medium oil ball, IMHO.

Unless it's oil soaked, the Big Shot is most definitely not for light to dry lanes. I think I said that above. It's for true medium and above. Honestly. And it is not a small hooking ball. 15 - 20 boards is not a "small" hook. (Thanks, Brian.)

Oddly enough, this weekend I was just re-organizing a regular arsenal and a larger hooking arsenal, for my summer league. The Big Shot is in my larger hooking arsenal!

That said, if you're happy with it, all well and good. Enjoy!

For me, my Big Shot is med-heavy oil condition. Ball is wayyy to much for medium condition itself. I would look into getting you're ball rejuvinated (removing oil from ball). I have 500 games on mine, and still plays like new.

See, told ya, Joe! Lol.

I was watching him throw it, and he was playing a big swing on the lane. I don't know exactly where he was standing because he starts one place and ends up like 10 boards left of that position lol. If the ball was kept on 2nd arrow or anywhere inside 2nd arrow, it was going through the nose. I will admit, the ball slid quite a bit and it does look speed sensitive.. but it was hooking a ton!
