I am not new to bowling but up until now I have only used lane balls. Since I recently joined a bowling club for college I would like to get my own ball. I don't have many revs yet and I throw the ball "slice" or "screw-ball" or whatever you may call it. My average with the house balls(many different) is around 140. I just want to get some feedback on what type of ball you all think I should use.
-
ok...i want more curve. i don't know what else to say because i don't know all of the technical terms for what the ball does. basically, i don't want to throw a straight ball. will it make a difference if i want to keep the slice or if i want a hook? i would feel more comfortable with the slice because i have learned to control it. i just need a ball that can hook more than a house ball. i can't get myself used to throwing a hook. if you need more info i'll gtive it to you. thanks.
-
i want a playable ball in most conditions, not just dry. and something that can be versatile if i want to change the way i throw. not a cheap ball either, something with some core technology that will make a difference.
-
i've been looking at columbia and i like the flipside series. ego/wicked/wild

i'm not a "beginner." i just need a ball that i can make work for me. obviously none of you would do very well with a house ball, because they suck. when i found a ball that i actually did like at the lane i started bowling upwards of 200. i just need a ball that can get me in the pocket continuously. when bowling with normal balls i can't convert the pins in order to strike.
-
I would DEFFINITLY go with a scout pearl, very cheap, and hits VERY good for being that cheap. Seriously, price isnt everything, those are QUALITY bowling balls. And if by "slice" you mean hook, then yes, it will slice. If thats not what you meant could explain what a slice is?

Do you know your ball speed? If you have a slower speed, then go with BK and get a scout. If you throw it fast, you would likely have to get something a bit stronger.
You know what I suggest? Just ask your pro shop operator, and if he tells you to buy some $200 + ball, tell him to f*** off and get a scout
The scout seems to be a very reliable entry level reactive type ball.

LMAO Andy, you know your just talking about skip!

i don't know an exact speed. i have never been clocked or anything like that. i do throw the ball harder though and would like more power. slice would be the opposite of hook. moving the ball from left to right, instead of right to left. that is how i throw the ball. i haven't had a real average but now that i'm bowling more frequently, i expect my average will be up around 160 even with house balls. i do sparadically get the 200+ game.
-
So you throw right handed, but it hooks from left to right like a lefty? I see. Well you'll have to get a lefty drilling or it will be a very slow crappy move to the pocket but I'd still say a Reactive Scout will do the job.

you think i would have to get a lefty drilling? that's not good. i seem to have pretty good control over the house balls...but whatever. i'll see about it when i go to the pro shop.
-
am I right about how u throw it tho? i mean you will need the pin on the left side of the fingers so that it has a good reaction

If you're gonna go out and spend money on a new ball abd are starting to get more serious about the game you might want to consider learning to throw a hook. It's not all that expensive to get some lessons and in the long run you'll be happy you did. If you break 200 now and then you probably have some sort of feel for the game so learning a new technique won't be too hard. Anyway good luck with whatever you decide to do.
Peace,
Chad

I agree, but I usually just try to work with what people have because most of the time no one listens anyways!
I think it might be because Im 15 though

i understand what you are saying about the lessons. i will consider that. but the cash right now isn't that big of a deal, i mean i'm not going to go out and spend $200 on a ball. but, most balls i've been looking at are around $100. that's not that much cash... i would also like a ball that's also appealing visually. i'm just wondering if you guys think the flipside ego/wild/wicked would be a good decision. those are the balls i am interested in.
-
all i'm asking is with the above info would you think a flipside ego/wicked/wild would be good for me?
-
It seems you have made up your mind on the ball you want. Why ask? THere have been many balls mentioned for someone just learning to throw a hook by some very knowledgable bowlers. Either take their advice or get what you wanna get.

You can always hit em hard when you've got the balls
Lefties are the only people in their right minds.

I suggest you go to a local pro shop,...explain to him what you want like you did here...let him see you bowl,..then together come up with a suitable ball.

If you are going to spend the money on good equipment, you really should invest the time and effort to change your release so that you can throw a hook rather than the "slice" shot that you are throwing now. Do that and you will find that your ball will have more movement, and your shot will be more powerful and you should begin to strike more often. Another thing to consider, are you using balls with a conventional grip, or a fingertip grip ?.......Anyway, work on that release and then it will be easier to judge how aggressive of a ball would be best for you.
