Is this right?
« on: July 24, 2004, 10:12:56 PM »

After reading several posts on some of the newer Columbia balls it appears that the Hyde is a slightly stronger version of the original red Pulse.  The Super Trooper is also similar to the Pulse but has a stronger cover.  It is not quite as strong as the Hyde and is not as good in oil.

The Detour is more of a skid-flip type ball and is somewhat similar to the Messenger Ti Pearl only a little stronger. It would appear to be best suited to medium to dry conditions.  I don't know how to describe the Panic but it looks like a go long skid-flip type ball.

Does this sound right?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Here's a few links that might help you.

By the numbers, the Super Trooper (rg's a little lower, but the diff. is close) should act close to a Pulse.  The Detour does flip pretty hard, but it handles medium to med/heavy oil.

The Detour is a skid/flip ball but i would say medium is the lowest u can go with this ball. Detour is medium/medium heavy from my experience with it.

Since the Full Throttle has a duller surface, it will handle patterns that are oily all the way down better than the Detour. However, when there is a fresh backend, or any kind of backend, the Detour actually covers more boards than the Full Throttle does. When your Full Throttle is burning out, use the Detour to play the inside line. It's recovery is excellent and will give u great carry because it creates such a nice entry angle. I don't know about you, but when I have my Full Throttle out, I usually play the middle to the outside part of the lane, and when I switch to my Detour I actually have to move left in order not to hit brook. Of course what matters here is how they hit, so when you're running out of head oil, Detour is your choice. Hope that helps. One step down would probably be the Wired and then the Super Trooper.

How does the Hyde fit in?  Will it handle more oil than the Detour?

The Hyde will not handle more oil than the Detour.  Did you look at the comparison link I provided?

Hook in oil: Hyde = 17, Detour = 21

Hook on dryboards: Hyde = 22, Detour = 27

Total Hook: Hyde = 39, Detour = 48
