Adjusting the Rival's cover
« on: December 02, 2009, 01:20:37 PM »
I have a pin over ring finger Rival with the cg kicked slightly out.  The ball's in OOB finish and excellent condition.

I really like this ball but it overlaps with too many other balls I own.

Has anybody tried the Rival at a different finish?  I'm curious how much oil this ball can handle, especially if you took it down to 1000 abralon like the Resurgence.

As always, your help is appreciated.

Dougb,
As a Columbia staffer, I've had the opportunity to drill several Rivals with different layouts and surfaces.  The first round of products released after the merger with Ebonite was the Rival, Resurgence, and High Flush.  The quickness in which the Resurgence revved and bled energy limited its usefulness for me on anything but heavier-oiled/flat patterns.  I'm a rev-dominant player due to my 15-15.5 mph ball speed.  That left me with a Rival and a High Flush to match up with.

As such, I found the Rival to be VERY versatile.  I drilled one pin over my ring, cg kicked out slightly, and was able to tweak the cover from 1000 abralon to 4000 plus factory finish and saw as much as ten boards of total hook in difference.  I 3 3/8 stacked a second Rival, and routinely was inside of the oil/track line on THS patterns.  Certainly the Rival was a player in oil for me.

Of course, that was based on oil volumes two or three years ago...with thicker and higher viscosities nowadays the total hook potential of a Rival would have to be downgraded some.

I hope this helps!

Paul,

This is very helpful, thanks!  I'm getting one of the new Innovative spinners for my birthday, so I'll try it at 1000 and see how it does.  One of these days I need to post a review on the Rival, a very good and versatile ball.

Doug,Paul  is absolutely correct in his statements. You can also try to bring your Rival up to a hi shine. I found that I liked it by going from a fresh 1000 resurface to the POWERHOUSE EXTENDER POLISH. I found that by skipping the other surfaces and going to the shine that it left some teeth to hook more at the start of the break point.

Good luck with the new spinner and keep trying new combos until you find what works for you.
