ICON 300...
« on: July 22, 2003, 09:50:02 PM »
I just picked up this ball yesterday, prior to this was a Jekyll. Played three games and it felt like the ball just wasnt grabbing. I am an average bowler (165) and just recently started a hook ball. I do not know technicals about how/where the ball is drilled except for the "pin" (please correct if Im wrong) is about an inch above and to the right of my ring finger. Weight placement, etc I have no idea. Any info would be great, and if more details are needed let me know and I will do my best to fill in the blanks. After spending $200 on a ball that is supposed to be good, I would like to get my moneys worth.

No, I am definately not selling it. I will give it awhile first, but no its not hooking, maybe a slight arc at best.

If the icon 300 isnt drilled correctly, it wont have much movment. The Icon 300 is one of the biggest heavy oil balls out there. Plus it die out fast on dry lanes.

I just started bowling again about 8 mos again. I started out with a Scout Reactive as per my local pro shops recomendation. I started to get a slight arc with the Scout (traditional drill), then about 2 mos again picked up the Jekyll. With the Jekyll I was able to pull about an 18 board hook smoothly. Thats when I decided to go with the 300. I do throw a fast ball (high rev?) and alot of people told me I need to slow it down to give the ball a chance to react. The reason for the 300 was I was told (again same pro shop) that I needed a dull ball. In my case I guess it may be the bowler Not the ball...Any more advice, keep it coming.

I agree with channel surfer. The Icon 300 is waaaay too much ball for almost any bowler I know. It rolls out way too early on most house conditions. It's made for a TON of oil - and even then, it looks to be hard to control.
What you're probably seeing is the ball dying because the conditions are too dry.
In other words - the ball is using ALL its energy getting through the first part of the lane, so that when it gets to the pins, it has nothing left. It can appear that a ball isn't moving at all when this happens, but just the opposite is happening.

It is possible. The lanes were quite dry this morning when I tried it out. Ill dry it tonight during practice before league play.

Surfer is right, the Icon 300 is one of the biggest hookers of all time, when drilled properly. I've had to polish mine to get enough length out of the ball.

I can try polishing it, but of course sounding like a newb, I must ask how? I know how to dull the ball, but how/what do I use/do to polish it up a bit?
