Icon2 resurfacing
« on: November 27, 2007, 11:35:39 PM »
Does anyone know what the original surface for the Icon2 was?  I think it had a compound finish but even the old C300 website was sparse on details.  I have one that I'm giving to a teammate and I'd like to give it some TLC first.

Also, can I use plain sandpaper on it or should I go with scotchbrite or abralon?  I know some of the old particle balls used real soft particles and using the wrong abrasive could basically sand the particles smooth.

I'm pretty sure the Icons had those soft particles. I'd err on the side of caution and use Scotch Brite pads. My Icon2 had what appeared to my eyes to be the equivalent of a 1000 grit compound polish. Hard to go wrong with that middle ground. (Sand to 600 {green pad} or 800 {light grey pad} grit and use Track's Clean and Sheen OR sand to 400 {maroon pad} and use a LIGHT application of Brunswick's Rough Buff or some equivalent thereof.)

I've got a tub of rubbing compound, we got it for our car.  I tried it on a spare ball and it gave a respectable looking compoundy finish.  Probably he doesn't care, so I'll likely go with something like a green or maroon pad and a light coat of Legends polish if the rubbing compound doesn't work.

Really I was worried about the abrasives and the particles, not quite as much about the surface finish.  Thanks.

Mine is still hooking!  And hitting.

266 the other day in a match with my son!  Pesky 7 pin!

If I remember right it might have been 600(green scotch brite) and 2000 degree polish!  I've used it that way and 1000 also for heavier oil with polish from Storm (doesn't raise grit).

That was a great ball and I still use it and it's more even brother the Icon.

Walter Ray made these two a devastating duo and I believe they are!

I always use scotch brite or abralon on all particles.

They keep going...and hooking....and going....and hooking!
