New Blue Dot?
« on: July 07, 2008, 05:14:24 AM »
I was looking at Buddies and I saw a picture of what appears to be a new blue dot.  Just curious if anyone knows anything about this, specifically ball hardness.

Thanks!

Well, they were the same for many years before the takeover.  Given the new logo that I see on the ball, I thought perhaps some changes back to the days of old might be in the works.

Actually, in theory, they were NOT like the White Dots. While they had the same hardness, they were less elastic. It's simialr to the difference between a pearlized coverstock and a solid coverstock of the same resin base. The pearlized one has the same hardness, but less elasticity. That makes its "footprint" on the lane smaller than the solid's "footprint". Therfore it has less contact surface. Same difference between a Blue Dot and a White Dot. That's why, I believe, the Blue Dot is still more expensive than a White Dot.

FYI, regarding the old Blue Dots:
Once they got tracked up, they hooked a LOT! no matter the hardness. You had to sand them to remove all the scratches. Then you had to sand them very fine, like 1500 - 2000 grit US scale (not Abralon) and re-polish to a super gloss to get them not to hook.  I have one and believe me, it's not easy.

About the only change I have seen with the later Ebo Blue Dots is that the blue pin itself is now at the bottom of the ball and no longer in the middle of the logo. I guess they went to the newer style Columbia logo on them now.

One of my teammates (low speed stoke lefty) tossed a 300 with his blue dot a few years ago. Stunning!

Just drilled one the other day.  Ball has a nice BD logo on side.  Punched it out  at 85-86

There's no info about the current BD's hardness - and the last ones were just simple polyester pieces with standrad 78-80 hardness rating, nothing special.

When was the last time you saw a white pin on a WHITE DOT.  It's been long over due give the Blue Dot the same type of logo as the White Dot

Unless they changed it recently again, the blue dot is on the bottom on the ball, since they just are plugging the core pin hole with blue now.
