I just picked up a NIB 15 lb Sur-D Pro on Craigslist, along with some other goodies (see the pic). 

I believe this was one of the first "soaker" balls that set off the big hook craze that continues today.  I found this great vintage Sports Illustrated article on Don McCune soaking his equipment: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1087795/1/index.htm

I'd love to hear a little history here and some estimates of what this could fetch.  Someone has a 16 lber for $400 BIN on eBay.

That was the 2nd release, not the original.  I believe the hardness came in around 75 while the first, the Shore D. was 72 or less.

The original Sur-D was 68 Durometer... soft enough to make an indent on a ball cup after a few weeks sitting in a pro shop.

The original soakers( Don McCune), not the ones you could buy were soaked in MEK, a chemical that was highly flamable and obviously unsafe.  The orignal Shore D was a sponge, the newer Sur D, like I said, was harder and was not as popular or effective.

Bring it by the shop and lets see the hardness and compare with the pearl version that I still have from the PBA tour! If I remember correct we couldn't get a reading of more than 68-70 and the PBA hardness rule was 75! I used it in 1977!!!!!!!!!!
