Marketing of the Epoxy.
« on: August 17, 2005, 03:25:02 PM »
Let me start off by saying, i dislike most particle equipment. I never really had a need for them, and i don't like the reaction they give me. Only ones i've had success with are pearl particles. That being said, has columbia killed their own particle sales with the introduction/hype of the epoxy cover? I watched the video that was posted here, and heard all the guys talking about how much greater this ball is than any particle, that particles burn up in the heads, this one will out hook it, and continue in the back, this one wont die, etc, etc, etc. So after hearing all this, why would anyone want to buy another columbia/track/amf, or any company's particle hook monster ever again?

I actually think its great marketing.  exactly, why would anyone want to buy another particle ball from ANY other company.  When columbia, track and amf all have this new Epoxy formula that is patented for however many years.  Brunswick, ebonite and all the other big companies out there won't be able to put out a new "epoxy" ball so Everyone will be buying the new epoxy ball from columbia/track/amf.  it steals a lot of business from the other companies and even though their particle line will drop drastically it will more than make up for it in the sales of their new epoxy coverstock.

they definitly made it clear that epoxy is just plain superior to particle and they pointed out all the bad things with particle, but being a track lover i can personally say that particle has its good days and bad, they work marvels in heavy(er) oil and give certain people the exact reaction they want and like to see in a ball, me being one of them, as long as there are quality particle balls i dont think the epoxy can replace them or make it so people stop buying them.

I am pretty sure that Columbia doesn't have the sole rights to "epoxy balls", I believe it is just this combination of epoxy/plasticizers etc.  If I understood what he said correctly.  Could be wrong but that is like whenever resin came out or particle then no one could use those, what would other companies have done?

I've heard some rumors that particle balls are definitely going to be gone.

A friend of mine was at Lombard Lanes in Lombard, IL last week. The ball reps were all there. Brian Voss and a few other PBA members were throwing some of the new equipment. The Brunswick people he talked to said that they definitely would not be making particle balls in the future, and most manufacturers were following suit.

I wasn't there myself...so it's hearsay. Wouldn't surprise me. I know it would make the center owners happy.

Nick,
I've been hearing a lot of rumors. I was at an anniversary party, Carmen Salvino was also there...I heard about 20 different stories (rumors) concerning the EPOXY ball, the fuure of particles, etc. All rumors as far as I can tell.

OK, the scoop is...

Epoxy is supposed to replace particle technology...
and will be licensed to other manufacturers (eventually).

I also heard some version of the cover will replace reactive covers in the future.

I haven't seen the ball in person. I watched the video, which was interesting.
Just another bowling ball.

I wonder how many bowlers can't

This is probably why Columbia has not released a solid particle in their high performance line in quite a while. The last was the Throttle which I bought back in November or December of 2003. So it's been nearly 2 years since they've released a high-end particle ball anyway. No surprise that their plan was to replace particle with epoxy.
