Alright folks, which Action would you go with...
« on: April 20, 2006, 04:04:21 AM »
on this type of house shot:

You can only choose between either the Action or the Action Packed.  I am trying to determine which ball carries the strongest following.

Thanks for your help.

Would you not want the action packed since the ball is more skip/snap. The more flippy the better on a house shot?????

Anyone agree?

I think I disagree.  On my THS the backends are almost always extremely clean.  The flippier a ball is the more uncontrollable it seems on this.

I agree w/ Rags........I'd go w/ a smoother overall ball...clean backs will give you a nice entry angle ....but if you have a strong ball off the dry, it can be hell and leave some nice designer splits!

I'm with rags and Jeff. I have both and the action holds off way more than it's skid flippin brother (AP). I've had my AP since it's been released and havnt had a chance to use it in league yet. Now the action gives me a much better look than the AP but to be honest I don't use that ball either. I use my U-Turns on stripped backends.

Oh, boy.

Here we go again.

IMHO, due to the coverstock's inherent capabilities, I notice a lot less immediate movement off the transition due to a number of factors.  #1) ball speed.  I have around 17ish MPH and don't really see an immediate read off of the oil.  #2) coverstock.  I'm not about to get into a shooting match about this any longer.  Let's just say that Columbia has a winning "formula" with the M80^2.  #3) core characterisitcs.  Clean midlane read with generous, but controlled, recovery off the cushion.

House Hack.  Nothing more.  Nothing less.  And, according to my therapist, that's not so bad.

If nothing is what the situation mandates, I'm the man for the job.

for me it would depend on what type of lane that pattern was used on.  the Action is going to read the mid part of the lane more then the AP but the AP will give a bit more length and harder break at the pocket.  Now if carry down is a issue with the house and if moves very quick I would go with the Action.

Both would have a good place on that pattern in one night.

I'd use an Action around 2000 grit with a high pin.

Danny Speranza of Columbia recommended the Action drilled strong for heavy oil.
I called Chris at Buddies Pro Shop and asked him what ball he recommended for my 3 man league with fresh oil. My detour skids too long first two games. He recommended the Action with 2-1/4 oz top weight and 1.5 to 2 inch pin with 4x4 drilling.  So I have one on the way (15lb 3 oz). Hats off to both Danny Speranza at Columbia and Chris at Buddies.  Both took the time to answer my questions. Greatly appreciated. I will let you know how ball worked for me.

That is really an unfair question.  We must know what kind of surface you are bowling on (new wood, old wood, and if synthetic, what type).  We would also need to know the amount of oil, and last off, the tendencies of the house you are bowling in, being breakdown patterns and carry patterns.  The more information you give out, the better an adaquate answer will be given to you.  I'm not trying to sound like a know it all here, but the truth is, lane graphs mean nothing, because most of the time, that is not the "true" pattern out on the lane.  The only real way to know what is on the lanbe is by throwing a ball, and getting a read on it yourself.  The ball will not lie to you.  So give us more info, and we can give you a very accurate answer.

For the "average" person, I'd go with the Action Packed.  Strong balls like the Action are often overkill on a THS and you have too many problems blowing holes in the pattern and the ball rolling out if you don't keep up with the changes fast enough.  But since your profile says you're highly speed dominant, I think the Action would be a better fit for you.

Sorry for not checking first.  Knowing you bowl on Pro-Anvilane is enough to tell you to go for the Action.  With Pro-Anvilane, 40 fet in length, and yourself being a speed dominant player, the Action sounds about right.  I'd say go with a 4 1/2" pin to PAP distance, 3 1/2" above the midline, and keep the box surface.  That will give you strong flare, but energy retained for the backend.  I'd kick the CG to just under an ounce, to leave yourself with room for a hole.  If it is burning too early, go with a low hole, or if it is too long, put a hole on your axis.
