Power Swing
« on: January 07, 2009, 01:42:47 AM »
Our Scratch League demo'd the Power Swing last night.  House shot on Brunswick synthetics.  Overexaggerated puddle which cause some problem for the guys that have some hand.  If you play out the ball hooks off you hand.  In and miss a bit in and it skates.  Rotationally challenged eat it up though as they'll go up 8 and let the ball settle up on that inside bumper.
Anyway, Dave Bartlett was up with about three dozen of these new pieces drilled pin up and over a bit from the ring finger, CG a little below and pretty much in line with the ring.  Strong controllable drill on the C300 website for this ball.
A good range of bowlers, Stokers, Croakers and Crankers decided to test this piece.  I asked Dave since I've been throwing the Sauce how this will compare. He said it's longer.  I haven't thrown Columbia for a while, since the days of the Cuda series.  Although they where a main ball in my bag to that point and I loved the Cudas.  This ball was much more than I expected.  Very strong to say the least.  While I didn't throw a big number as the drill was a pinch off to allow me to really cut loose with it.  This ball crosses some boards and hits.
Started hand straight up the back standing 40 and throwing at the dark outside indicator down lane.  Ball gets through the fronts, although with the oil in this place on that line it should.  Once it starts to read friction makes a very hard and continuous turn left.  225 first game.  Middle game started to leave some 10's and tried different things.  Finally made a hand position change to the stronger and moved my fingers around to the inside half of the
ball.  On every ball I've thrown this is a 3 to 4 board move left.  More revs, less effort and less of a chance to grab to hard.  First shot ball goes brooklyn.  Wow !! Moved three more on the next one and it still went brooklyn.  Finally 3 more got me back in the sock.  By then middle game was done, 180 something.  Now I'm standing about 50-52 and throwing just inside the outside indicator which has me crossing arrows about 25 or so. Decent look and another 225.  I think the Columbia gang is going to like this ball as will most others that throw it and are looking for a piece that gets down lane and keeps going left once it turns over.  I'm interested in seeing this ball with a better fit for me on a little flatter pattern.  One of our better players who bowls on the Bowlers Edge team that one Nationals a few years ago shot 300 with his the third game. For the most, very positive comments on this ball.  Should be good seller.

how much do you drift because if you stand 50-52 wouldnt you be in theory setting it down on approx. 44-42 and therefor lofting the guttercap

Yes I do loft the gutter at that line and anything left of it although I don't get much more left to often.  I generally walk towards my target a bit rather than straight to the foul line which keeps me square so if I need to play up the rail it's all the same feel. By doing this I don't open up at all which if you do when you are on the gutter can lead to an occasional shot in the ditch.  Even with this though I'm sliding at the gutter capping and actually am starting in front of the ball return on the even lane.  Lots of guys play this far left at Nationals or on tougher patterns if they open up that way.  I've seen righties playing 7th arrow, rarely, but it happens.  It's actually fun playing that deep on a house pattern.  A) it gets you used to it. B) you aren't using the dry much at all. On that line with a break point at 8 or 10, 43 ft down lane you are in the oil all of the time.  You know IF you happen to get a pinch wide it will hook up. C) Others wonder how the h*** you can do it o) and D) It's deep enough that it doesn't seem to mess up the pattern for the majority.  They may think it does and it might changes it a little but generally the guys I bowl with don't see to much of an issue at least with the conditioners they use around here.  It's just easier in the end for me rather than fight the over under playing the standard 15 out to 8.  Miss wide early and it's brooklyn, miss in and it's a bucket.

ya. although i slide 28 to start a league night, i tend to ball down once i get to a certain point. i do practice lofting the cap but im not very good at it even though im more of a power player. but once i get to where im sliding 36 i ball down because at that point i am up against the ball return and imo it makes it harder than it has to be for a house shot. this is my thinking, if you can just ball down, play straighter and not have to be in front of the return, why not do it? all you have to do on a house shot is bank it off the dry and its in the pocket. i understand you were dmoing a ball so thats prolly why you were that far left.
i also laugh at people that say where im playing messes with their line because im a lefty that plays 3rd-4th arrow on a regular basis so im a goo 7-10 boards inside of everyone else on my side. if anything im breaking down the right side more than the left. lol
